Chad Love: Who’s Worse than PETA?

By Chad Love

I've always believed - and argued the point on this blog -  that hunters who get worked up over the antics of groups like PETA, C.A.S.H. and In Defense of Animals are, quite frankly, wasting time and anger best utilized somewhere else.

Why? Because for the most part the wacky wing of the animal rights movement is a politically marginalized collection of barking moonbats whose constituency consists of groups like the Silkworm Liberation Front, The Vegan Unicorn Brigade and the Norway Rat Protection League.

OK, so I just made those groups up. But my point is, of the challenges facing hunting in the 21st Century the self-aggrandizing performance art of such groups ranks way down on the list. Habitat loss, climate change, rampant development, degradation of public lands, an alarmingly sedate, clueless and zombie-fied culture and the increasingly superficial nature of the American hunting scene itself all pose far greater dangers to our future than a few vegetablists in dire need of pharmaceutical help.

And here's a perfect example.

PETA Leader to Have Her Hide Tanned to Make a Point

Ingrid Newkirk, founder of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals India, has drawn up her last will and testament, directing that, after her death, parts of her body be put on display or sent to those responsible for abusing animals...

1) A portion of her own skin is to be made into a leather product, such as a handbag, and displayed outside the Indian Leather Fair each year to draw attention to the suffering of cows and bullocks slaughtered for their skin.

2) A portion of her body is to be cooked in a ‘human barbeque’, to remind those who eat meat that it is flesh and that no one needs to eat it.

3) Her feet are to be cut off and turned into umbrella stands, similar to those made from elephants’ feet, which she saw when she lived in Delhi as a child, to admonish against the use of animals as mere objects for human entertainment.

It's painfully obvious to any sane, rational individual that Ingrid Newkirk, and by extension the organization she heads, is simply batsh*t crazy. Her stunt will do absolutely nothing to erode, endanger or eliminate hunting in America. And that's why I don't pay much attention to PETA. They're good for an occasional chuckle and a shake of the head. Nothing more. But if you're going to worry about animal rights activists then concentrate your energies on the ones who wear suits, act normal and carry briefcases containing legal documents because they're far more dangerous than the naked nutjobs.

Quit giving them press coverage, good or bad it keeps them in front of people. Maybe you (F&S) should not mention their name, of course they are not going away because of that, concentrate on our cause, hunting, fishing and all things related. F&S as a magazine and now including the web site have done more good for animals and their habitat.
Hey Ingrid, see you, well actually your leg at the barbeque, is it going to be marinated? Really like to see which sick bastard you picked from your group to do the cooking, did your lawyers get an ok on that one.

You nailed it, Chad. I pretty closely monitor public opinion on hunting and what these groups are saying, and I can tell you PETA has virtually no impact, and HSUS is devastating - the words and ideas they quietly slip into the American consciousness absolutely color what non-hunters think of us. Like this guy I met Saturday night. He's actually taking hunter safety and planning to start hunting, but he still thinks most hunters don't eat what they kill - that they collect their trophy and leave the meat lying in the field. Why does he think that? He doesn't know any hunters - so whatever's in the public consciousness is all he has to form his opinion.

While it's true Newkirk needs help. Her truly insane antics and those of her followers shouldn't be downplayed. There are a lot of these types with lots of money living in Hollywood, and they hire "the ones who wear suits, act normal and carry briefcases containing legal documents".
Two of your 'real' problems Chad, habitat loss and climate change, are aided by these nuts who buy up as much land as possible only to prevent hunting and fishing on it and tirelessly promote the falsity that man's industry actually has an impact on global weather.
They're dangerous because they market well. People say 'I'd never do something that crazy!! but it is wrong to eat meat' or 'That lady is nuts, but killing animals is wrong.'
Never underestimate an adversary, naked or not.

Who is worse than PETA? How about Arlen Spector who by switching to the democratic party along with Al Franken's possible victory in Minnesota will give the democrats the magical 60th vote. This means the dems could push ANY legislation they want through congress and there is nothing any of us can do about it. Wonder why they haven't been coming for your guns? This is what they've been waiting for, thanks Arlen, thanks a lot.

You are correct about PeTA not really being a threat to our heritage but the same cannot be said about the Humane Society of the United States. They are one of the main threats to hunting and trapping today. For example, they are the main impetus behind the nearly 60 bills in 32 states that could affect your ability to hunt with dogs and to be a hobby breeder. They single handedly won the issue to ban dove hunting in Michigan in 2006. They were behind the end of trapping in numerous states. They are the main group trying to use the Endangered Species Act to adversely affect all hunting, fishing, and trapping in the north woods of Maine and Minnesota. They are also trying to end all hunting on the National Wildlife Refuge System through a dangerous lawsuit. The list goes on and on. They are a formidable foe with over 10 million members and well over $100 million in annual income. Don't sell them short. They are masters at the divide and conquer tactic - picking on sports that are enjoyed by smaller numbers of sportsmen and sportswomen. They are certainly the largest threat to certain types of hunting such as hunting with hounds, bear hunting, dove hunting, hunting on federal land, and trapping. Your challenges to hunting I agree with but you need to add HSUS high on that list.

Bravo on a great post!

Most of your fellow blogers would have posted a like to the article and said "what do you think?" ...Like they didn't already know!

You brought the article to our attention, but also used it to make a great point about how we spend too much time and energy on nut jobs like this. "Habitat loss" and the "superficial nature of modern hunting" don't make nearly as much noise as these nutjobs, so they don't get as much attention.

That being said, you are probably right that they pose a larger danger to the hunting community than PETA right now.

I work with Rescue agencies and animals. All our pets are rescues.

That said, PETA really is a bunch of wackos. But they're well-financed, high-publicity wackos. Any true animal lover pretty much wants to stay well removed from them. There's actually an issue in the township of their headquarters to declare them a slaughterhouse, because they kill over 93% of the animals surrendered to them, usually without the poor people knowing that PETA does not consider it their "job". Caring for, saving, or homing a dog or cat does not garner them publicity or money.

There is much good from the HSUS, though. Yes, they can go off on strange tangents due to whatever the leadership at the time feels is the "best just cause", but they are the ones behind puppy mill closings all over the country. I've seen their work in action and I will not condemn that group.

As for someone's mention of "hobby breeders", I don't believe in them, or the AKC, or ANYBODY breeding ANYTHING as long as shelters are full and millions of fine, purebred dogs are put to sleep. Go watch perfectly healthy Labrador puppies being euthanized and tell me some idiot needs to make a few litters in his backyard. One of our rescues is a purebred that, because of a bit of white on his chest, the breeder dumped him. Curse the AKC.

Possibly a bit sorry for the rant. I don't know fishing, but I know animals. So many of you talk about hunting dogs, showing dogs, trials, and how great they are, but I know from experience that so many "true hunters" keep their animals under conditions that are nearly, if not actual, inhumane conditions.

You can look at this from three different perspectives.

1.) The PETA people are the unfit and based on Darwin's law need to be exterminated.
-or-
2.) The PETA people just follow their beliefs as far as we would. Here's a question, how far would you go to protect what you believe in? These people just go a little more extreme.
-or-
3.) We can just be ignorant and blame them for our faults (which some of us already do, and oddly enough, that stuff is what makes headlines for us).
Take your pick gentlemen.

Yet, I won't give them credit for acting normal, as they are certainly "Batsh*t Crazy". Folks, the answer is both black and white... and I bet they BOTH eat beaver. If you haven't guessed yet...
Obama and Hellary! I bet Hillary would help dear old Ingrid right out of her skin and barbeque to boot! Like they say on Fried Green Tomatoes- "the secret's in the sauce..."
And to think, they were ELECTED... by our fellow Americans... we are in trouble...
