Contest: Tell Us Your Dog's Name. Win Free Stuff.

Man’s Best Friend is kicking off the weekend by giving away a six-pack of Cabela’s training dummies for the best dog name.

Here’s how our contest will work: Tell us your pooch’s name and the story behind why you chose it. You have until 3 p.m. on Thursday, July 16, to enter a response in the comments section below. A team from F&S will sort through the responses and pick the winner. I’ll announce the victor in Friday’s post. Allow me to kick things off.

Pritchard was named after an undeveloped barrier island (Pritchard’s Island) off the coast of South Carolina. I’ve trudged through the waters there since I was a kid, catching fish, exploring the marshes, and simply getting lost. If it were possible, I’d have my ashes scattered over that beach, but there’s too much to do before then to think about those morbid details.

So I named my pooch after the place. That and I think it’s a very cool sounding name, which shortens nicely to Pritch. So fire away...funny, emotional, serious, light hearted, whatever. Tell us your dog’s name and the reason behind it. You (and your dog) just may be the winner. Good luck.

My dogs name is Bella, and she is a green eyed yellow lab. The story of her name is one of reluctance and chance. I started pheasant hunting last year when I moved to Minnesota, and found out that I loved it. I am from Wisconsin where deer hunting takes precedent to pheasants. I decided shortly after that I wanted a dog to train and hunt myself. Growing up I had a Golden Retriever, but never a trained bird dog. My live-in girlfriend thought that getting a dog was too much life altering responsibility, but she could see that I really wanted to get a pup.

Now comes the naming of Bella.
My girlfriend agreed that I could in fact get a dog on one condition: she gets to name her. I thought, “Great, I am now going to have a hunting dog named Candy or Princess.” Instead, due to a series of books she had been reading (teenage girls love them and they made a movie about the first book,) she decided on the name Bella.

We picked Bella up on February 8th and have never looked back. She has been a great dog so far. I can’t wait until October to take her out on her first hunt, and the name Bella rolls of the tongue pretty easy too.

I'm the third of four boys in my family, and while I know my Mom loves my brothers and I to death, deep down I also know she wouldn't have minded a girl. That's probably why we've only ever had female basset hounds. That's also probably why she picked an especially girly name for our current hound: Princess Lulu Belle.

My dogs name is Shadow, she is a three month old black lab. My grandpa had black labs all his life. He had a Brandi and of course Shadow. When he was 60 years old he had a heart attack and passed away when I was six. Shadow was born on March 25 just six days before my birthday. She was born in Baldwin Wisconsin. I am 12 years old so I want a good gun dog for my first hunting season. So, I named my lab Shadow Brandi in memory of my grandpa

I have a Boykin pup that is about the same age as Pritch, and this was one of my finest unauthorized purchases to date!!! I am married and have a 5 year old daughter. Needless to say the house and lifestyle lacks many of the masculine features that I was used to growing up in a house of 3 boys. The truth is that I needed a bit more testosterone in the house and the dog seemed like the best way to get there. I named him Hondo. This is the location of the annual dove hunt on opening day and will be his first dove outing....Hondo, Texas. I also felt that it was an appropriate reference to John Wayne (nothing feminine about the Duke!!!).

Thanks for the articles.....I am experiencing a lot of the same things and it is great to hear how Pritch is progressing. This is my first Boykin and I believe that I have found the perfect dog for myself!!!

My German Shorthair/lab? mix is named Sog. My wife and I had been on vacation visiting her family in England where on the last leg of our trip the word Sog kept coming up. Partly because it often rains in England and partly for other reasons, so we got home and I picked up the pup that same week. I had a cardboard box in my car that she rode home in and by the time I got home from a short drive she was wet and so was the box, but it wasn't from her peeing, it was drool, she used to hate car rides. So she was all wet and soggy, we decided that we would call her Sog or Soggy, it rhymes well with Dog or Doggy and I wanted a single syllable name that didn't sound like any commands I would teach her. We haven't really hunted much, I can't find many good areas for ducks or quail, but she loves birds and has found some quail when we weren't hunting.

Harley, we named him that because when he was a pup he hated our bikes (mine being a Yamaha 250 motor cross bike...) Eventually he found if he hopped in the sidecar on my dad's bike, he would be able to go for a ride.

I'll declare myself ineligible for the prize, but here's my dogs:

Dubh Linn (aka Dublin) - Irish for "black pool" and the name of my pound puppy black Lab, which I got not too long after a life-changing trip to Ireland.
Aengus - Stuck with Irish theme and went to Inishmore, where there stands a prehistoric fort called Dun Aengus. Of course, out here in beef country, everything thinks he's named after a cow.
Kitty - My first dog, a Lab/Golden cross. I just loved the look I got when I yelled, "Here Kitty, Kitty!" and a dog came running.

My name is Davis Parten. I am 26 years old and grew up in Georgia. I now live in the state of Tennessee with my wife Erica and my 8 month 80lb Yellow Lab. My Lab's full name is "Rebel's Lightning Scout" but we just call him Scout! The story of how I came up with my dog's name began during my childhood. Growing up dad had an old International Scout. This thing would "do it - to it" The scout was our hunting vehicle. Dad and I spent many mornings driving to hunting camp and I spent many evenings asleep in the passenger seat on the way home. So I quickly developed a Love for the old scout. After many years of memories in the old scout, Dad decided to sell our trusty hunting vehicle. From that point on I always knew I would one day have a dog named scout. Fast Forward to December 2008. Erica and I had just bought our fist home in may of 2008, a cabin bordering a state park/WMA. It was not long before we began talking about wanting to look for a dog. I love to duck hunt, so a Lab was our first choice. We began looking in the paper, looking up breeders on line, and really trying to do our homework. I was, and still am, a grad school student, so we were on a budget. It was a cold and stormy night in December. When I arrived home from work my wife told me there were a few ads in the paper for lab puppies. After a few calls I found a breeder who still had puppies. We decided to brave the weather in hopes of picking out our perfect pup. When we got to the breeder's home, it was really storming. We looked at one specific pup, a male, almost white in color, and agressively playful. We put a deposit on him and came back a few days later to pick him up. It turns out his daddy's name is "Rebel". So in my dog naming glory, I decided to name him "Rebel's Lighting Scout". I chose the Lightning middle name because it was lightning so much the night we picked him out. I have had a few looks from friend's when I tell them Scout's full name, but I wouldn't trade it for anything. His name brings back great memories, from childhood to a cold stormy december night. I finally got my Scout!!

My one buddy said name her Cooter Brown, and I thought that was the most awesome name ever. So I know have a black lab chow mix named Cooter Brown, and she has no brown on her at all. Also the name comes from an old southern saying "drunker than cooter brown" She isnt a hunting dog but I love all the same

Long before she was my wife, before I knew her actually, Megan named her chocolate lab puppy Jest Fur Elise. This is her official AKC name, its after her sire and Megan's favorite classical song, Fur Elise by Beethoven. We call her Ellie, smelly Ellie, Ellie bean, Beany, Beaner, and Elise marie when she gets into trouble. Our other lab was a rescue and he came with a name, Remington. A little over done I think but that's what it is. We call him Remmy, Rem Bone, bone head (he is kinde thick headed) and Remington when he gets in trouble.

My family's golden retriever's name is Sawyer. He is three years old. We named him Sawyer because of Sawyer from ABC's "Lost". The name fits him perfectly. They both are bad ass! Sawyer is about 100 pounds, he loves to swim a lot. He has been known to swim around a swamp with big ice chunks still in it from winter. He has also brought me baby snapping turtles, he has killed a few rattle snakes. And above all, our black lab had a kitten in her mouth just about to kill it. Sawyer opened up a can on her! He saved the kitten and made the lab bleed all over the garage. She was ok though.

My dog's name is Jade, a black lab mix im guessing. She was kinda of a thanksgiving present. A coworker found her and her sister at his front porch. He check around for someone that was missing their dogs. No one claimed them so after a week he was looking to get rid of them and didn't want to take them to the shelter. I told him I was interested. He brought them to work on a day he had off. What can I say we hit it off right away. Her nose was busted up a bit from something and I didn't think anyone would want to take care of it. Told him I would take her, but if her and her sis were two feet away they'd whine and wimper. So i told him if no one else wanted the other one. I'd talk my buddy in taking they other one so they could still be together. Now we got ourselves a couple bird dogs in the making.

The guy we were getting the goats from also raised and sold beagals. Pete was a bit older than they guy liked to sell em so we agreed on a price. That has to be one of my best purchas yet. He's my right hand dog. I'll take him quail and grouse hunting with me. He does'nt retrieve, but if I need to scare some birds out of thick brush all and got to do is point and tell em " go get em " then wait for the birds to fly.

Well for starters i am a 14 year old male from N.Y. I am one of five kids and have a little mutt, and a yellow lab that ive tryed to train and she wouldnt lissen. I just bought a new Golden retriever for duck and goose hunting we named him jake. Hes a playful curious dog willing to learn, and loves water. My father and i go duck and goose hunting every weekend during the hunting season. We had use to have a brown lab named Jake. Jake the went with us every week we went, he knew when we were going hunting. He was trained from the time he was six weeks until he died. Jake was a great dog, if there was a cripled duck on the other side of the lake we wouldnt even be able to keep him in the blind. He loved everything about it. He never looked for a treat, all he ever asked for was to get out on the lake and be a retriever and he was by far an amazing dog. With my new jake i want him to be able to follow our brown labs paws and love what he does. I've been reading a duck book about how to train them and for how long so ive been following the book along and its going alright he still needs alot of work but hes only 6 weeks so i got alot of time to teach him.

I have close personal relationships with several dogs. I remember them all. My first was an English Springer Spaniel that was the best lap dog on earth. She came from the pound with papers and we called her Gypsy because she was one. We gave her unconditional love. She died when I was ten and I cried because she was my first love. We bred her to a field trial champion several times and kept the best she ever had. A dog named Kong because of his liver markings that resembled King Kong. That dog could hunt. Eventually my dad got an English Pointer and named him Sam after the man we purchased him from. There was never a finer animal that did what he was genetically engineered to do. He was also a cold blooded killer. My dogs have been named Grizzley which was a half Akita, 1/4 Red Wolf and 1/4 German Shephard. He would kill someone if they attacked my family and yet never bit a human but he loved to kill other animals. Just don't try any aggresive behaviour toward my family if you are around. After that I decided to tone it down a bit and got an old Black Labrador Retriever named Midnight. 15 years later he died and we now have a promiscuous Yellow Lab named Blondie...

Beau was my male Newfy. Massive, gentle, noble yet goofy, and extraordinarily intelligent. Named after Beau Geste and Rear Admiral Francis Beaufort, who devised the Beaufort Scale for rating marine winds. Newfoundlands were working dogs on many ocean going sailing ships. They would save sailors fallen overboard and haul nets, lines, and boats.

Neighbors brought over their newborn baby and laid her on a blanket. Beau came bounding over, saw the baby, stopped about 6 feet away, dropped on his belly, rolled over on his side, dragged himself close to the baby keeping as low as possible, and stretched his neck to gently lick her toes. Mom had tears in her eyes.

When Beau died the neighbor kids put a tin filled with flowers on his doghouse. He was the finest dog I've known.

I don't need the training dummmies but just wanted to share a bit of Beau's story.

Although not hunting dogs, my parents have always had a German Shepherd, always a male, and always with a name that started with B: Butch, Buddie, Bear, Buster, and Bronco.

Here's how we came up with the name our yellow lab. My wife and I love to visit microbreweries when we travel. We thought about and jotted down some basic names that related to her light yellow color. We finally came up with "Hefeweizen" - our favorite German wheat beer. Since she had to have a registered AKC name, he "proper" name is “Sunflights’s Pint ‘O Hefeweizen” though she’s known daily as “Hefe” (pronunced Heffy). (Sunflight was the kennel/breeder we bought her from) I guess like Prichard, it shortens nicely to Hefe which is how your order this beer at the brewery. Plus, we preferred something with two sylables since it's generally easier to say (or yell when she's fooling around out in the decoys and a flock is spotted on the horizon). Our second choice was “Cider.” If she was a chocolate lab we may have named her “Porter” (my favorite dark beer). And that's our dog's story...

Black Labrador named "Braveheart".

My wife gave him to me as a Father's Day present 2 years ago. His "litter name" given him by the breeder's kids was 'Rasacal'. The wife insisted on naming rights since she paid for him and figured I would name him something like 'Rufus' or 'Duck'. She named him 'Braveheart' because he seemed so fearless at 9-10 weeks old attacking the other dogs and barking at all strangers at that young age.

Of course, his name is shortened to 'Brave', except when he is in trouble! He was a bit of a wuss early on, but get too close to the truck now and you will see how he lives up to his name.

I picked out a name for my dog before I even knew what I was getting. After shopping around, we had decided against the English Bulldog and got an Eskimo Spitz. Not really what I would call a "mans" dog. Anyways, the dog grew on me, and I noticed we had a little Napolean on our hands. It was fitting, since we named him Reagan, which means "little ruler". He thinks he rules the house, and is about 30lbs. Definately little and a wannabe ruler. Totally fitting for him.

I named my dog "Grimmy" after the comic strip "Mother Goose and Grim" in the newspaper. Grimmy is a pit bull/boxer mix (mutt). He came to me as a stray pup around the fourth of July a couple of years ago, afraid of fireworks. As I was raising him, I noticed he had some of the mannerisms of his cartoon namesake. He likes to sniff out rabbits and quail in the desert around our house. I am trying to get him used to loud noises like gunshots, but living close to Edwards AFB and the fighter jets breaking the sound barrier hasn't helped. It's startling sometimes when one hits and having 52 pounds of dog in your lap. But all in all he's been a good dog. He's my "Director of Home Yard Security."

She also has a German shepherd paint job. She is named Heidi because she looks like a "little German shepherd girl". (Okay, the REAL Heidi was Swiss!)

My dog's names come from songs. My golden is Maggie, from The Doors' "Maggie McGill." My yellow lab, who passed on 2 weeks ago at age 14, was C.C., from "C.C. Rider." A former co-worker of mine, a huge Beatles fan, named his two labs Abby and Penny, from "Abbie Road" and "Penny Lane."

Although not hunting dogs, my parents have always had a German Shepherd, always a male, and always with a name that started with B: Butch, Buddie, Bear, Buster, and Bronco.
