Discussion Topic: Soldiers Hunt and Fish For Free

This week a new North Carolina state law went into effect allowing active members of the military to hunt and fish without a license while home on leave. I admit, as a discussion topic this one is a little light on controversy; most of us, I think, would agree that the folks protecting our freedom should hunt and fish for free. But this is a perfectly good forum for us to show our support. So let’s hear it.

I agree 100%, they should get to hunt and fish for free if they are home on leave. I'd bet the NCDNR won't lose enough money to be noticable. I live and hunt in SC and my license is only $25 for combo all game and freshwater fishing. It is the least we can do for the sacrifice they are making to make sure we get to keep hunting and fishing. I don't know but I really hope SC is etiher already doing this or quickly follows.

When i was in the service, my trips home to PA were fishing license free while I was active duty. I'm not sure about the hunting though. Thanks to all the other vets out there, currently serving, honorably sperated, or retired!

New York gives me a free big, small game and fishing license if I am on leave less than 30 days out of the year and stationed outside NY. Not a bad deal I ever pass up.

Being able to hunt and fish for free is the least of what they should get, they should also have reduced tags for states they are not residents of as well, for when they are stationed around the country....

Good law. Charging them is a crime. Have they not earned their keep? I agree with idaho.

It says state residents ..."State residents serving active military duty and home on leave can hunt or fish without a license."

It would be nice if a couple of veterans who were having a re-union, could get together for a couple of days,to hunt and fish.

It's been that way for awhile in Kentucky,as long as you have your orders or Military ID on you while in the field.

Congratulations NC residents!

Iceing on that cake would be if Cabelas or Bass Pros kicked in a little gear like a box of ammo or fishing line and lures. Perhaps an outdoor writer with connections could lobby the big cheese.

it should be free for our soldiers to hunt and fish free wherever they are. wether they are home on leave, or at theair regular duty station. they put in a lot of long hours training and maintaining equipment to ensure that we enjoy our freedom

I have nothing but respect for our fine men and women in the armed forces. They put their lives on hold to serve and protect this great country. They should be able to hunt and fish anywhere for free. To think otherwise is criminal.
To any of you who have worn the proud colors of the good old USA, THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE AND GOD BLESS YOU.

good for NC. i am glad to see a state make that move i have wondered why that has not been more common. seem they have to pay twice for the right to hunt and fish and that is not right.

They sacrafice their lives in order to protect our freedoms and our people, hunting and fishing for free is the LEAST we can do for them. There should also be some kind of discounts for veterans who have served in the past.

Great! Better late than never. Not only should all states pass similar laws but guides and outfitters should also participate by providing returning veterans with free fly trips. We practice what we preach in New Mexico. Wild Rivers On The Fly, a guide and outfitter in Taos Ski Valley, New Mexico provides free fly trips to returning veterans regardless of their home state. Veterans can contact us at www.wildriversonthefly.com, or 505.715.6773. Support the TROOPS - Support America.

I'm in the Army and a residents of North Carolina. A buddy of mine told me about the new law and I just arrived back in NC for my two weeks leave last Thursday. Before he told me, I was wondering whether I should purchase a hunting license for the two days I might be able to go hunting. THANK YOU NORTH CAROLINA!!!! My father-in-law and I are planning on going in a couple days. I'd like to thank the people of North Carolina for supporting us, and for all the other fishers and hunters as well. I agree with Mike Diehl though, we may protect the country, but there are Police Officers that protect you in this State, and they are just as much a hero as I am. Maybe we could give them some slack as well? Again thanks to everyone out there that supports YOUR soldiers!!!
