Discussion Topic: On New Jersey’s Next Bear Hunt

By Dave Hurteau

Bear-related complaints and incidents have risen steadily in New Jersey since Gov. Jon Corzine forced his nonlethal management plan on the state in 2006. So what will it take to get another bear hunt? How about new governor?

From The Express-Times:

The Democratic incumbent's gubernatorial opponents, Republican candidate Chris Christie and independent Chris Daggett, stand on the other side of the debate and support having a bear hunt, according to representatives of their campaigns. . . .

"This is a serious matter of public safety," state Sen. Steve Oroho, R-Sussex/Morris, said in a statement. "Adults and children alike in our communities are literally under attack because the bear population is not being adequately controlled."

What do you think? Will New Jersey see another bear hunt without another governor.

A new Governor would be a GREAT start to fix this, and of course a bear season is needed. A bear season is a wonderful way of management because there is no natural predator that I know of in New Jersey that threatens the bear population, so why wouldn't the bear population get out of hand? New Jerseys state senator understands it perfectly, so they NEED to get rid of the governor and find a new one that is willing to get over his personal beliefs and actually do whats right.

Here's how to fix the situation without having to get a new Governor voted in:

Trap and tranq a good-sized bear.

Transport said bear to Governor's home.

Release bear in backyard to terrorize pets, children and otherwise wreak havoc.

There should be legislation passed in record time setting up a bear hunt.

The people who are against bear hunting actually value the life of the bear above that of a human...there is no reasoning with these lunatics...the Political Correctness and Enviromental Goodness that has been pounded into their heads through the education system and the media has all but rendered their brains useless...

New Jersey needs a bear hunt, but no one is "literally under attack". That's just ridiculous. I don't even know what to say to that. ...Bears, Oh My!

What does "literally under attack" mean? for many in the northern half of the garden state it means destroyed property- trash cans, trash enclosures, cars, grills, pools, gardens, bird feeders, pets, livestock etc. It means someone will be seriously hurt or killed by a bear(s) in the near future if nothing is done. when I grew up in the garden state summer nights meant camping at least in the back yard, but that is no longer safe.

As a NJ taxpayer, voter, resident, public servant, hunter and fisherman, I say "CORZINE MUST GO!". As far as being under attack, that's just sensationalism,...but NJ is up there in terms of Bear vs. Human conflicts, mostly in the northwst part of the state but they're expanding their range. From a common sense standpoint, why does Corzine spend taxpayer money to manage the states bear problem "non-lethally" when a bear hunt has proven to be the best method and generates revenue? BTW the Unions voted this corrupt JERK in and he repeatedly stick's it up their u-know-whats. Yet they'll endorse him again. Unbelievable. C'mon people, I implore you! Think for yourself!

For those of you that, like me, read Superman comics in your misspent youth and will get this, Corzine and several other governors are like the bizarro opposite of Sarah Palin.

i agree a bear hunt is needed ,about 2 yrs ago!! we have 3 mom bears and each one has 3 cubs each ,the one bear chased us in our car when we tryed to scare it out of our yard ,and the other 2 are in are yard every day so my 2 kids need to stay close to the house and watch for bears when we swim in our pool and play out side !!just last night our neibors dog was killed by a bear ,and mine was mauled 4 years ago ,i predict if we have no hunt a child will be killed and then the poloticians will do something i think we should relocate them to the poloticians homes and see how they like there animals being killed and mauled come on lets start making noise so we can get a bear hunt going .

why don't those who support a bear hunt read the stats from the opra requests. More people injured their children and others in car accidents while drunk or under the influence. Why not spend the money you want to spend on hunting to enforce the laws on speeding, drinking and drugs and uncovered garbage in bear areas rather than what if a bear does this and what if a bear does that.

The bears are generally harmless. I've lived in bear country. Bears run away from us because they fear people. We are to be feared who shoot arrows and bullets. There are insects who can cause more harm to people. They are God's creatures who put them in our care to protect. Someday we will be held accountable by the Creator as the Bible says: "No creature is concealed from him, but everything is naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must render an account." Hebrews 4:13

Unless the current governor is replaced... I dont think he will get the message. Some people just do not get it. Hunting is needed for population control. That way, some animals don't pose a threat on humans.

To all of you who think it makes sense to replace a governor to restore lethal bear management to the State of New Jersey, I say:

- Lethal bear management causes more injuries and deaths to humans than black bears. Hunting accidents happen all the time. Hunters get too close to houses and actually discharge their weapons through people's back yards, windows and walls.

- Hiking during hunting season is sheer terror. God forbid a hunter shoots you thinking you're a deer or bear. Accidents happen all the time, the perpetrators get off because everyone thinks it's perfectly logical to allow them to roam our woods armed and dangerous.

- People who can't spell or think things all the way through should have humility and tone down their poorly-conceived, in your face, over the top rhetoric.

- Non-lethal bear management addresses the issue on far more fronts: controlling garbage (NJ has a bear-feeding ban that includes garbage management, but it needs better enforcement), stewardship of wildlife and the environment, minimizing risks of lethal force, education about the true nature of bears and how to deal with them, controlling human overpopulation and development in environmentally threatened areas.

- Black bears are an ancient species that evolved differently than grizzlies by becoming excellent climbers and swimmers. They are intimidated by aggressive behavior. They chase their cubs up a tree and will climb one themselves rather than attack. If they feel cornered and no escape route is perceived, they will bluff charge.

- The idea that "hunting is needed for population control so some animals don't pose a threat on humans" ignores the obvious inherent conflict of that statement. Hunters are the animals who pose the serious, clear and present threat, not black bears. The statistics bear this out, no pun intended....
