Utah Family Fights Off Black Bear Attack
From the Desert News:
A 78-year-old man was hospitalized Friday with injuries he received when he was attacked by a black bear in a remote area of eastern Utah. . . .
One of the victim's daughters jumped on the bear and hit it with her fists, according to a
statement from the DWR. After another family member joined in the struggle the bear let go of the man at which point the bear was shot in the back by one of the victim's grandsons. The animal ran off and was found dead after sunrise.

What struck me most about this story is that he's 78 years old & out river rafting in the back country with his family. That's awesome. And the family pulling together to fight off a bear--what a great story to tell the next generation.

The victim's daughter jumped on the bear and began to hit it with her fists!
She is the hero in this story!
The victim's Grandson was the smart one for carrying the gun!
The family that rafts together .. are all in the same boat!
It doesn't say but I wonder if the bear was attracted to the camp by food not stored properly?
buckhunter the article did say that the food was stored away from the camp and the sleeping area and that DWR stated that the campers had done everything right. So much for the argument against being armed in parks and wilderness areas.
right on target JohnR if the grandson had not been armed who knows what the outcome would have been.
As for the daughter that jumped on the bear good for her and i am glad it worked out.
Thats a really cool story and it is a good thing that there were family members there and that they were ready ad willing to jump in and help him even at the risk of injury to themselves, on another note it is impresive that the guy was 78 and still doing the things he loves.
Sounds like grandpa just got a brand new favorite grand-child.
