Bear Hunter Attacked By Grizzly—And Shot By Friend

Talk about your bad luck, from Denver’s CBS 4 News:

A hunter attacked by a grizzly bear in southern Montana also had the misfortune of being shot in the arm by a companion trying to stop the attack. . . .

Park County Sheriff Allan Lutes says his office looked into the shooting of the hunter and found no negligence. . . .

Lutes says the hunters thought they were tracking a black bear near Cooke City.
They entered a grove of very dense, second-generation pine six to eight feet in height when their quarry, which actually was a grizzly, jumped one of the hunters.

"He was yelling at his partner to shoot the bear," Lutes said.

The first shot struck the hunter in the arm. Subsequent shots hit and killed the grizzly, which Lutes said was estimated to be 20-25 years old.

I'll take a rifle shot to the arm if it means getting a grizzly off me!

What's a little lead between friends. If my hunting partner shot me while saving my life, I'd thank him & buy him a beer. I'm glad this turned out OK (except for the bear). I will point out that more experienced bear hunters would probably know the difference between black bear & grizzly tracks. I won't knock these guys too hard for that, since I don't know the difference either (not many grizzlies in Florida).

I had a friend (now deceased, R.I.P.) who had one come in his camphouse one night. His description of that event along with this leads me to believe that I would be OK with someone shooting me in the process as long as they got the bear too. One is about as unpleasant to think of as the other.

That episode had happened when he was a much younger man.
He was a colorful and supremely tough old b@st*rd, and when he talked about it he'd tear up and get quiet. You could tell that event shook him bad. Just the recounting has left an impression on me.

I'm sure those two will never forget this day and will be friends for a good long while. What a story they'll be able to tell their grandkids

I heard that there was only a bullet fragment in his arm and not a whole bullet? This is from someone that lives nearby. Maybe he was wrong.

I'll take a bullet in the arm any day over a Grizzly chewing my face off... How you been Del? Beautiful grandaughter! Sorry I've been away so long... I'm back to stay. No one can compete with Dave and his disciples. Intellectual and share my passions! Man I need a big deer soon. I can almost taste it!
