Discussion Topic: “Serial Hunters” “Mutilate” Canada Geese

By Dave Hurteau

And how do we know the geese were “mutilated”? Because it says so in the newspaper. Here are the headlines:
Chicago Sun-Times: Four Canada Geese Mutilated in Naperville
Chicago Tribune: Naperville Investigates Slashings of Canada Geese
Chicago Daily Herald: Naperville Cops Say Mutilated Geese Were Dumped By Hunters

Read the above stories closely and you’ll learn that not only were the mutilations likely carried out by hunters but, far worse, by “serial hunters.” Still, the most shocking detail lies in precisely how the animals where defiled--and I have to advise caution here: Their breasts were missing!

What kind of sick bastards . . . ?

Lol, thats a rarity though, Hunters in Naperville. (Live 45 min from it) Ridiculous how "Terrible" us hunters can be, you know, with all that supporting wildlife rehab and conservation.

Ah that's good stuff.. would have liked to see some of the public comments to the newspaper.. As I'm sure they had all the facts straight when they wrote in outraged at such animal sacrifice and mutilation.

I am always amazed and appalled by the piss ignorance and bias displayed by the lame-brain media every time the subject is related to firearms or hunting.

I was prepared to go nuts when I read those headlines, but the articles are actually pretty even-handed in their explanation of why the geese were cut in the way they were. One even used the term "breasting out" and explained it. I'm afraid the ignorance here is on the part of the hunters who dumped animal caresses on someone's land or on public property. If you were a non-hunter, as distinguished from an anti-hunter, and you had to clean up this mess, what would be your lasting impression of hunters and hunting? "We have met the enemy and he is us."

I read the first two articles and they seem pretty reasonable/accurate to me. Maybe some of the earlier newspaper accounts were more inflammatory and nutty??

It sounds like*:
1. The cops were the real idiots. They seem to have told the papers the geese were protected.
2. The reporters, not knowing any better, probably didn't see any reason to check what the cops were saying, and ran with the cops' version.
3. The cops forwarded the case to DNR for further investigation.
4. The DNR called back saying, "Hey, about that 'mutilation' case..."

*But I'm only reading between the lines. This could all be wrong.

That said, if someone dumped the carcasses, they're a freaking idiot. It did sort of sound like they may have fallen out of a moving vehicle, though, in which case I'm not really angry at anyone.

After reading the stories, I agree with the Armchair Outfitters comments.

While I find the headlines inflammatory, the stories really paint a picture of slob hunters who should do a better job of disposing of the carcasses of the birds.

It's almost funny... except that I think the guy(s) who dumped the carcasses needs a smack upside the head.

Some of the public comments in the daily herald had it right. But to the naperville cop who said it's a hunter ,who's to say it's not a poacher.People in that area are not big on licenses.[boat, tailer, fishing, hunting, business or plumbing]

All the stories seem to be fair in the explanation of what happened. If it was a hunter who carelessly threw out the goose carcasses, shame on them. But, as was said earlier, the carcasses could have fallen out of a truck (doh!) or this was the work of poachers.

Yup-- Takes five minutes to dig a hole and bury em. Most could use the exercise. Whoever it is they are pretty good because it sounds like they only shoot the females!

Many hunters breast out geese. I will pluck a Canada goose only because it looks so darn good in the oven. Everyone here in my area however breasts out Snow geese. If one ever tried to eat (naw is more like it) a Snow goose leg one would understand. Many people even breast out Mourning doves. I think the core issue of the articles is the inappropriate disposal of the carcasses.

What's with these morons today. That not only disrespects the community as a whole but the life of the animal. They should be found and prosecuted.

when it comes to chicago, anything even remotely related to a firearm is a tragedy. someone should tell the newspapers that the geese were abducted by aliens and returned after being dispatched by popsickle sticks. might save a lot of people a lot of drama and they'd probably believe it. if it was hunters, they did a poor job of disposing of the carcasses. i would have liked to take some of the feathers for flytying.
