Hurteau: Score Some Bucks, Win A Mathews Z7 Bow
By Dave Hurteau
The Z7 is Mathews’ brand new flagship model for 2010. The company touts it as their best-ever blend of speed and forgiveness, featuring an IBO speed of 332 fps, a 30-inch axle-to-axle length, a 7-inch brace height, and a retail price of $899.
And it can be yours. All you have to do is score some bucks.

We’ll keep it pretty straightforward: Each Friday, for one month, I’ll post a picture of a buck (or two). You guess the gross B&C score(s)--to the inch--and keep track of your guesses. On the last Friday, I’ll ask you for your grand total. Whoever is closest wins the bow. If there’s a tie, we will have a buck-off. I will post a photo of some insanely gnarly rack, for which no two people could possibly offer identical guesses, and the finalists will have at it until we have a winner.

In the meantime, you are welcome to post your best guesses for each buck. Or you can have more fun by keeping your best guesses to yourself and sabotaging your friends with purposely misleading information. For example, the big 8 above was taken with a Mathews Reezen by Hunter’s Specialties Pro Staffer, video and TV personality, and Arkansas backgammon champion Phillip Vanderpool, who after 15 days of tough luck in Iowa and Illinois—I mean the kind of brutal, brutal hunting most of you could not endure—arrowed this Kansas stud on November 21st. At 6-foot, 5-inches tall and pushing 250, Vanderpool can make any big buck look small. So don’t forget to factor that in.
Okay, have at it.

Wow...$899 for a bow? That's the buy one, get one free price, hopefully.

153 4/8
140, tough angle
No thanks- I wouldn't trade my bow for a Mathews, that and I'm not into scoring horns, it just turns hunting into something it never was. A mockery!
128 5/8
I'm agreeing with steve, it's a very tough angle. But looking at it, I'd say around 130...
134 5/8.
Only my opinion. I may be right or wrong. But I think you can have fun scoring horns, and still know what hunting is really about.
140 1/8

Vanderpool, by the way, is actually about 5-foot, 4-inches tall and 142 pounds soaking wet--not to mention a very nice guy for playing along.

158. If this guy is that big, this buck is pretty damn big. How much did he weigh? We should have a weight contest sometime, too.
I am goin with 120
I'll send three new turkey calls to the first person to accurately guess Vanderpool's height and weight.
(Hint: In case you didn't catch it, the figures I've given so far have been "misleading information.")
5'10" 170?
Scoring horns from a photo is an art and will ultimately help you field judge deer. I know many do not hunt for horns but many of us do...to each his own.
161 5/8
i say he is 5 foot 7 inches tall
Im going to go for 132 - 3/8 for the deer and 6'2" 215 for Mr. Vanderpool
After a little research I'm gonna make another guess of 5'9" 165 lbs (phillip not the deer)
with the kicker on the right rack 155 3/4"
156 1/4... I would love to have a new bow. I currently shoot a Matthews Q-2 that I bought in 2000! it still amazes me 10 years later how great a bow it is. I have heard that they have since gone way too comercial and offer an overpriced and not so worthy product, so much so that Davis Sports in Sloatsburg NY wont even sell their products...I cant make that call yet...until I get the FREE one!!!!

Last week I got my new Z-7 eat your heart out guys. IMHO This is the best bow ever. Would be nice to have 2 of them so here goes. Phil is 5'10" 190 lb. The buck scores 128 inches gross.

that doesnt change my buck score though and for the most part thats not a bad angle there just some of the antler circumference that you cant see and for the most part 98% of bucks antlers are close in size to their matching antler.
haha that may not even be the right deer with the right hunter... its prbly cut and pasted so that the distortion is greater and even harder to judge the actually size of the deer... but hey good luck to everyone this is going to be interesting to see how far off our scores are at the end...lol
looks like 126 to me

Ok, go ahead and laugh. I don't know the measuring requirements, to score antlers. I,m new at this and you think that living in Texas I would know. And after admitting this, someone in Texas is bound to throw my cowboy hat out of the truck window for sure now!! Now admitting my honesty where can one find the formula to calculate antler scoring measurement techniques. I got buddies that guess or extend there deer trophy scores. But I do know it has to do with each antlers length, a spread and points. Typical and non-typical. So whats the real correct formula and how? Whitetail or Muledeer
