Johnny Weir to “Crazy Fur People:” I Love “Wearing Dead Animals”

I’m not going to touch this one, except to say that opposition to animal-rights activism makes for strange bedfellows—not that there’s anything wrong with that.

From Reuters:

Johnny Weir was forced to abandon his vow to never again live in the confines of a "communal athletes village" after the "crazy fur people" issued death threats against the American fashionista.

The figure skater felt the full wrath of animal rights activists PETA after he wore a fur-trimmed outfit at last month's U.S. Nationals.. ..

“All these crazy fur people definitely changed my mind," Weir told reporters after turning up for an 0800 news conference sporting a striking red and white silk scarf looped around his neck and with his nails manicured.

"I'm an easy person to pick on because I'm very open I like fur and I like things that come from dead animals.”

In short, Johnny Weir is on our side.

Your reaction?

I am glad he did not cave in to PETA pressure. there is a lot of room in this would for everyone, and if you do not like hunting, then don't hunt. If you like wearing fur, wear it. If you want ti engage in a discussion debating your preferences, fine, I can handle that. Like the old saying ,"your right to swing your hand ends at my nose", don't push your agenda down my throat.

I like Johnny and his style.
The color of the fur on his back would be ideal for a snowy winter hunt.

If Johnny had proof that it was PETA threatening him, I say take 'em to court. That's organized crime!

I think it's fair to say that most hunters are "very open" because we "like fur" and "things that come from dead animals."

I say "Go Johnny Go,Go!"

I wonder who his designer is?

You have to have a little good will to anyone, no matter how, errrm, unusual they are, who stiff arms the animal rights crowd.

It'd make for an interesting set of F&S articles if Weir would take up hunting. Think he could score a hunt with the Nuge? Think we could get a "My African Safari With John Weir" article out of Petzal? ;)

Well Put RJ. Well done Johnny, Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, tastes, and ideals.... but you or PETA does not have the right to force your ideas on someone else or demean them for their way of thinking. Arguments, heated debates, thoughtful discussions.... fine. But by threatening someone or belittling them you only create more animosity and anger.

All,

I think this would be a good place to remind everyone that websites such as F&S.com are continually monitored by PETA, HSUS and their like. They are continually looking for fuel that will make outdoorsman look bad. Keep that in mind when you post comments.

Weir may trade skates for fashion

VANCOUVER, British Columbia – Just moments after the performance that cemented his place in America’s hearts, Johnny Weir was contemplating turning his back on the sport that has given him his platform for extravagance.

No figure skater, man or woman, is more in your face than Weir, who delivered his usual dose of outrageous and unapologetic theater at the Pacific Coliseum, to finish the men’s event in sixth place. However, as Weir exclusively revealed to Yahoo! Sports just moments after finishing his program, he might not be in your face for much longer.

“I am going to skate in the World Championships and then I have to decide how long I want to stay on vacation,” he said. “In figure skating your body can only last for so long. I can’t be 50 and trying to skate but I can be 50 and be in fashion, so I have to look to my future and what I want to achieve.”
Weir is only 25 but the chances of him still being able to compete at the elite level by the time the Sochi Winter Olympics roll around in 2014 are slim.
He has already made steps into the fashion world through skating, and designed both his costumes for his short and free skate programs in Vancouver.

His love of fashion was highlighted in his television documentary series “Be Good Johnny Weir” – and a recent email exchange with Yahoo! Sports revealed that his long-term enthusiasm for the sport that was waning.
“The best part about my series to me is that I can show the world the real, difficult, lonely life an athlete has,” said Weir. “Especially a figure skater. We rarely have the opportunity to have a voice outside the costumes, makeup and music.

“I want to create art more than anything and the way I want to do it is through fashion. I want to go to the Fashion Institute of Technology in Manhattan and really learn the basics of fashion from the ground up.
“I want to create things while I have time on earth, and the art of costume and culture has always inspired me. I think being in the public eye can only help me launch into the world of fashion.”

Weir heads to the World Championships in Torino from March 22-28 before his decision that shapes his future looms. Whatever path Weir decides, don’t expect it to be boring.
