Chicago Tribune: “City Gun Ordinances. . . A Failure”
From a Tribune editorial:
When Chicago passed a ban on handgun ownership in 1982, it was part of a trend. Washington, D.C., had done it in 1976, and a few Chicago suburbs took up the cause…expect[ing] to reduce the number of guns and thus curtail bloodshed….
In the years following its ban, Washington did not generate a decline in gun murders. In fact, the number of killings rose by 156 percent — at a time when murders nationally increased by just 32 percent….
Chicago followed a similar course. In the decade after it outlawed handguns, murders jumped by 41 percent, compared with an 18 percent rise in the entire United States. . . .
[Gun-control advocates] wagered that strict controls at the local level would acclimate Americans to new regulations at the national level. But…the persistence of crime in supposedly gun-free zones…[has only proven] that such regulations have little impact on the people who present the biggest danger….
Gun control supporters fear that if the Supreme Court invalidates local handgun bans, the consequences will be nothing but bad. That would be easier to believe if the laws had ever done any good.

AMEN!
Increasing the 2A Rights of law-abiding Citizens will lead to a DECREASE in violent crime. It's been proven time and time again. Infringing on our 2A rights makes us easy marks for the criminals who have no regard for law, gun bans or Supreme Court decisions. Think about it, attempting to reduce crime by restricting the potential victims? It's a severely flawed concept embraced by a severely flawed party.
This was more of life insurance for the criminals. A sweet guarantee that when committing a crime you are the ONLY one with a weapon. I'm sure they lowered the gunman death rate for gun crimes, those are the only numbers that lowered i'm sure.
The #'s don't lie. Not to mention States allowing concealed carry or open carry have proven crime reduction across the board.
“The peaceable part of mankind will be continually overrun by the vile and abandoned while they neglect the means of self-defense. The supposed quietude of a good man allures the ruffian; while on the other hand, arms like laws discourage and keep the invader and the plunderer in awe, and preserve order in the world as well as property. The balance of power is the scale of peace. The same balance would be preserved were all the world destitute of arms, for all would be alike; but since some will not, others dare not lay them aside.... Horrid mischief would ensue were one half the world deprived of the use of them; . . . the weak will become prey.”
-Thomas Paine (1737-1809), in "Thoughts on Defensive War", in The Pennsylvania Magazine, July 1775
Once again, "WHAT PART OF, THERE IS NO GOVERNMENT ENTITY RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR PERSONNEL PROTECTION YOU JUST CANNOT UNDERSTAND!!!!"
Gun bans make otherwise law abiding citizens criminals for wanting to protect themselves. It seems that this alone is unconstitutional. The criminals are going to have guns no matter the law. Seems like common sense but we know that is not too common in politics. At least we now have the numbers to prove a point, hard to argue with that.
Huntnow may I add,
In Europe over 40% of all robberies at home, the family is still in the house and become prey to the intruder with a gun!
Australia went down with only a whimper. But what separates the United States from the rest of the world, we are willing to fight for our freedom. For Freedom and Liberty is not from the Government to the People, but People to the Government!!!!
There is a sleeping giant in the United States and may God have mercy on there sole if they awaken it!!!!
There is a reason in all the places I have lived, break in and drive by's came to a screeching halt when I moved into the neighborhood and children where able to play in the street. GO FIGURE!
Sorry for the extra posts, this really strikes a nerve and makes me mad as hell!!!
“But I don't want to defend myself.”
-reportedly uttered by a Brady Law supporter
What can I say, Here's your sign!
banning guns anywhere should be considered intrapment. if you don't have a gun to defend your family, you risk being a victim. but if you do own a gun to keep your family safe, you go to jail. these days we really have no choice. it is not our fault that the courts continue to cut deals with violent criminals and state and federal governments continue to try to restrict our rights to self defense. instead of tougher sentencing, they inact tougher laws on law abiding citizens. have you ever seen a law abiding criminal?!
jamesti, "if you don't have a gun to defend your family, you risk being a victim." that may be true but another piece of comfort for non-gun owners is that if 1/2 of the population has firearms you are protected by the fact that an intruder knows that there is a 50% of getting shot. Instead of having a security sign in your front yard, maybe a set of antlers over the garage or a hunting sticker on your window would work better as a deterrent.
I said this earlier but there are five Justices of the Supreme Court who need our prayers. If one of those five could no longer serve, we're through.
Clay, you must be one bad mother!
jamesti, I like your concept of entrapment, if i understand it correctly... The criminals, knowing there are unarmed potential victims en mass in a certain city(like Chicago), just cannot help themselves. By disarming citizens the government has caused these criminals to commit crimes they otherwise would not have committed had the victims had a chance of being armed. Ergo, they've been entrapped. Any "good" lawyer could surely win this as a defense. LMAO
huntnow
I must be one bad mother?
Not at all, you pick on my neighbor you pick on me, it's that simple.
There are two kinds of people in this world, those who are shot at, then there are those who shoot back with overwhelming precision fire power and they knew it!
I lived in Chicago for two years, and there were a few times I wished I had been allowed to keep a handgun. Though I lived in a relatively low-crime area, there was a rash of muggings of men in their twenties after midnight in my neighborhood for a few weeks. Not wanting to be a victim when I walked home from playing out (guitar at local bars), I started carrying a knife inside the shaft of my cowboy boots. Luckily I never had to pull it (probably for me; I've only stabbed dead deer), but I would have felt much safer with a gun. Personal anecdotes aside, the news showed a story about a shooting in the city about every time I turned it on, which was infrequently because you get tired of hearing about it after a while. In addition to the unconstitutionality of handgun bans, Chicago clearly demonstrated that outlawing guns results in only outlaws having guns.
steve182 - I think that jamesti meant that otherwise law-abiding citizens are entrapped into violating gun laws through their desire to protect themselves from criminals.
steve182 had a good point. i didn't look at it that way. there is a sign in a neiborhood in my town that says,
"THIS IS A GUN FREE ZONE! NO FIREARMS PERMITTED!" that is just to much for a criminal to pass up. i have NRA stickers on my doors and windows. if that doesn't deter a criminal, he deserves a good retirement. oh, and as i am the only one that lives there, i don't bother with a light in the case of a break in. everyone gets shot!
Everybody repeat after me, SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED!!! I must be a bigger idiot than I thought. It seems to be that if we have a guarteed right and the words "SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED" are present then nothing, anywhere, ever can infringe on that right. It doesn't say the right to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed, unless you go into a mall, bank, hospital, bar, school, etc. At exactly what point do we have to give up our rights and why do business owners get to decide that we have to give up our rights? Now you could argue that we don't want people going into our elementary schools with guns. Honestly, I don't have a problem with that!! The people that mean to do others harm DO NOT CARE what the law says they are just going to do it. Police officers don't remove their guns before going on school property and according to BOR Ammendment II, we have as much right to carry a gun as they do. I'd rather some teacher or soccer mom pull out their gun and pop a few rounds in someone that is there to do my child harm than hide under a desk or in a closet because they have absolutely no way to defend themselves or others. On the other hand, I've heard that there is a law against killing other people and that the penalty for that is much worse than for breaking any gun law. There must be because that never happens so maybe a law banning all guns from everywhere forever will work. WTF!!!
Ahh don't you love the irony. Our founding fathers placed the right to bear arms in the constitution so that citizens could protect the personal freedoms they hold dear. 200 years later cities violate this 2nd amendment right, and then the freedoms protected by the right were violated, as evidenced by rising crime rates in those cities. when will those silly gun control folks learn that the amendment is there for a good reason?...it works!
“If the personal freedoms guaranteed by the Constitution inhibit the government's ability to govern the people, we should look to limit those guarantees.”
-President Bill Clinton, August 12, 1993
“the purpose of government is to reign in the rights of the people”
-Bill Clinton during an interview on MTV in 1993
“The presidency - by which I mean the executive state - is the sum total of American tyranny. The other branches of government, including the presidentially appointed Supreme Court, are mere adjuncts. The presidency insists on complete devotion and humble submission to its dictates, even while its steals the products of our labor and drives us into economic ruin. It centralizes all power unto itself, and crowds out all competing centers of power in society, including the church, the family, the business, the charity, and the community.”
-Lew Rockwell, president of the Ludwig Von Mises Institute
“In a time of universal deceit - telling the truth is a revolutionary act.”
-George Orwell
I just find it amazing the anti's can't accept facts like these as proof the concept doesn't work and will still argue the facts.
"Would it make you feel any better if they got pushed out of windows?"...Archie Bunker
"They", meaning shooting victims, of course.
Clay Cooper I am impressed with the amount of research you provide to the posts. Keep up the great work and here is a thumbs up to you.
I wish more people would point out that criminals bread criminals. Just look at what Chicago's Cabrini Green did for them. It provided a meca for drugs and crime.
Concealed And Carried
Those who oppose legalizing concealed carry argue that we don`t need a concealed carry system because Wisconsin already has a relatively low crime rate. In essence, these opponents are saying that 24,000 rapes, assaults, robberies and other violent crimes every year constitute an acceptable level of criminal violence.

“Our analyses provide no evidence that implementation of the Brady Act was associated with a reduction in homicide rates. In particular, we find no differences in homicide or firearm homicide rates to adult victims in the 32 treatment states directly subject to the Brady Act provisions compared with the remaining control states.”
-Jens Ludwig and Philip J. Cook, in The Journal of the American Medical Association, 2000-Aug-2, Homicide and Suicide Rates Associated With Implementation of the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act
Hats off to Steve Chapman. It's sad that submitting an editorial has to seem 'courageous', but in the 'anti' environment that is Chicago, his editorial is a breath of fresh air. Not to mention a healthy dose of COMMON SENSE. Hope alot of the dummy's in Chi town read it.
Statistics are like bikinis. They show you enough to get you interested but hide the vitals.
"Laws that forbid the carrying of arms...disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes...Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man." ~ Thomas Jefferson
It is always amazing to me that the Founders had all this common sense, and today's enlightened, liberal pinheads know so much more about what is good for the great unwashed. Pity that none of their enlightenment falls on the criminal element that cause the rest of us, that choose not to be victims, to remain armed.
Gun bands would work great for reducing violent crime if those darn pesky criminals would start following the laws!
Irony is a funny thing.
The headline isn't news to anyone here in F&S land--good to see this printed in a Chicago paper--maybe the facts might sink into some of the thick skulls there.
“I don't care if you want to hunt. I don't care if you think it's your right. I say: `Sorry, it's 1999. We have had enough as a nation. You are not allowed to own a gun, and if you do own a gun I think you should go to prison.'”
-Television talk-show host Rosie O'Donnell
First reaction: hoots and hollers. 2nd: DUH. 3rd: I feel like things are really going our way lately, the future favorable decision included. People everywhere are finally seeing the light after decades of failed gun control. It's showing in legal changes and in changing attitudes among the people. I know a lot of people that now want to buy a gun, when they were borderline anti just a few years ago.
The facts that have been so obvious to us are finally shining through to the seemingly blind masses.
Highcountry, I know what he meant, I was trying to take a different approach, apparently ineffective, but i amused myself so it was well worth it.
I think that crime statistics are completely irrelevant to the most dedicated gun control people because they were never motivated by the prevalence of crime in the first place.
the only problem i see with the constitution as a whole is that it is too easy for anyone to interpret it any way they want to make a point. lawyers are good at that and judges just make a decision based on their personal beliefs instead of the law or the constitution. i'm afraid if this administration gets it's way, we are headed for war. watch out for the U.N. to land if that happens.
D.C. and Chicago proved that old adage that when guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns.
You know, if anti-gunners would have the guts to propose an actual constitutional amendment to overturn the second, I would fight it tooth-and-nail, but at least I could respect them for it; instead of this sneaking around the constitution they try to get away with.
The editorial in the Chicago Tribune gives me a glimmer of hope that we, as Americans, sometimes try to achieve a goal for the supposedly greater good. We after a while realize that the logic supporting said goal was flawed or based upon the empty promises or theories of a few persuasive individuals. That is the hope I cling to for all of us as Americans and a country. The same thing can be said about the last election. Many Americans voted for change. Now that some have seen what "change" really means, they have become smarter and less apt to be fooled again. What's that old adage "Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me!"
Fantastic posts gentlemen! Im not the sharpest knife in the drawer but " shall not be infringed" seems pretty clear to me. Frankly I think people who oppose gun owner ship are sheep and mental defectives. The stats stare at us in the news every day!!!!!
A story came out of Chicago a few weeks ago about a survey done among Chicago teenagers. The gist was that none of them felt safe on the streets and several of them owned guns, others wished they could get their hands on one for their own protection. The point of the story, as I took it, was to promote gun control. The point that flys right over the head of Mayor Daley and his lackeys is that Chicago has had strict gun control laws for years. If that was working, kids would not feel unsafe and think they needed to be packin' heat just so they could walk on the street. All these years of gun control in Chicago have not disarmed one criminal, it just makes law abiding people unsafe. I know I am preaching to the choir, but the choir is the only group listening!
The editorial is correct but the paranoid ravings in some of these posts make me shake my head - Lew Rockwell is just another fascist who would be happy to create a real tyranny here. Those kind of far-right kooks are the real danger to our freedom and why I make sure to always be armed.
Down ding this all you will. But the extremist right wing paranoids that are attacking and killing and terrorizing will doom us and our freedoms long before anything the government does. There is no difference between, say, Joseph A. Stack or John Patrick Bedell and Osama Bin Laden and we deny that to our peril.
wlewisiii-
To what "paranoid ravings" do you refer? To compare a libertarian Like Lew Rockwell to extremists like Joseph A. Stack or John Patrick Bedell makes me wonder about what you are trying to say. All I have read here in response to the Chicago Tribune article is a fervent hope that the intent of the Founders will be fully honored, and not infringed.
This sounds a lot like Prohibition. Getting rid of alcohol was supposed to make the country more family oriented and get rid of drunks, and instead all it did was give birth to a new form of crime. This topic and law seems to have had the same intentions, but clearly is not having the desired results.
Gotta say this the best plans are not always the best or well intended.
Groups like the Brady Law supporters that are harrassing honest and legit businesses for their views and stance on upholding the legal rights of all citizens and the laws of the state they operate in. Great example!
They want to ensure that all anti gun laws are passed and the Second Ammendment is stripped from our society.
I think that the Supreme Court may have it's hands full on this one and that Obama appointee Sotomayor needs to have her vote neutralized ASAP. She is but one on the panel that we need to worry about. She has already proven biased, sexist and borderline racist with her past remarks.
Hopefully the pro voters on the the panel will prevail again and sway one of the middle ground judges to makes it a 6 to 3 or 7 to 2 vote that settles this is a pro second ammendment and pro gun owner
I always liked the Robert Heinlein, the science fiction writer, quote. "An armed society is a polite society. Manners are good when one may have to back up his acts with his life." Short, sweet, and to the point.

Gun Rally
Liberals and the NRA have found common cause in a pending supreme court case.
By Ben Adler | NEWSWEEK
86Ram, that was very interesting and informative. Thanks for sharing! It appears that some are realizing that if one of the Bill of Rights can be diminished, then the rest are easy prey
JohnR. I thought it was a good article when I read it. So I thought I'd share since both the story and link to it were on a liberal news site (MSN) and Newsweek.
Maybe we can all work together in some way to protect the most historically significant and the most important document in and of our nation. The Constitution. The building block, The Key stone, The most influencial document in our society. The one document that dictators, tyrrants, the UN, Communists fear and loath because it Garauntees that the Citizens of the United States have rights and freedoms that their people may one day want.
What is so confusing about The right to keep and bear arms shall not be in fringed upon? It doesn't get any more plain and simple than that. I carry everywhere because crime crime knows no boundaries. In other words crime can happen anywhere and if you can only carry some places criminals will take advantage of that.
Sorry for the typos, I can't seem to multi task very well.
we all know that the police cannot be everywhere at once and the bottom line is that they are not obligated to respond to every call they recieve. since this is the stark reality that we live in, how can anyone say that we should not be allowed the right or means to defend ourselves and family. instead all law abiding adults should be REQUIRED to own a gun.
Jamesti I wholeheartedly agree! We need to get all the state lawmakers (as in from every state) off their collective butts and have them make it easier to obtain a concealed carry permit. In some states it seems they are so worried about covering themselves, the CCW permit process is a burden. (I say this with the caveat that some states actually do have a simple CCW permit process.)
I say make it simple. If one qualifies to purchase a handgun, then one is automatically eligible for a CCW!
Gun control = Sight Alignment, Sight Picture and a steady trigger squeeze.
Quite a surprising admission from the liberal Tribune. Maybe there is some hope...
I read somewhere that in the old west the presence of firearms clearly displayed; led to a culture where people were overly polite. I guess you might be a little less inclined to start an argument with someone if they have a .45 with a well worn holster on their hip.

I just find it amazing the anti's can't accept facts like these as proof the concept doesn't work and will still argue the facts.
"They", meaning shooting victims, of course.
Gun bands would work great for reducing violent crime if those darn pesky criminals would start following the laws!
Irony is a funny thing.
The headline isn't news to anyone here in F&S land--good to see this printed in a Chicago paper--maybe the facts might sink into some of the thick skulls there.
The facts that have been so obvious to us are finally shining through to the seemingly blind masses.
the only problem i see with the constitution as a whole is that it is too easy for anyone to interpret it any way they want to make a point. lawyers are good at that and judges just make a decision based on their personal beliefs instead of the law or the constitution. i'm afraid if this administration gets it's way, we are headed for war. watch out for the U.N. to land if that happens.
You know, if anti-gunners would have the guts to propose an actual constitutional amendment to overturn the second, I would fight it tooth-and-nail, but at least I could respect them for it; instead of this sneaking around the constitution they try to get away with.
Fantastic posts gentlemen! Im not the sharpest knife in the drawer but " shall not be infringed" seems pretty clear to me. Frankly I think people who oppose gun owner ship are sheep and mental defectives. The stats stare at us in the news every day!!!!!

Gun Rally
Liberals and the NRA have found common cause in a pending supreme court case.

86Ram, that was very interesting and informative. Thanks for sharing! It appears that some are realizing that if one of the Bill of Rights can be diminished, then the rest are easy prey
we all know that the police cannot be everywhere at once and the bottom line is that they are not obligated to respond to every call they recieve. since this is the stark reality that we live in, how can anyone say that we should not be allowed the right or means to defend ourselves and family. instead all law abiding adults should be REQUIRED to own a gun.
Gun control = Sight Alignment, Sight Picture and a steady trigger squeeze.
Highcountry, I know what he meant, I was trying to take a different approach, apparently ineffective, but i amused myself so it was well worth it.
I always liked the Robert Heinlein, the science fiction writer, quote. "An armed society is a polite society. Manners are good when one may have to back up his acts with his life." Short, sweet, and to the point.
