Idaho House Votes To Protect Hunters’ Identities

Many of you have been following along on this story, but in case you missed our previous posts, here’s a little background: Earlier this year, Boise wolf advocate Rick Hobson used public records to post on a website the names of 122 hunters who reported wolf kills to the IDFG, including Robert Millage, our own “idahooutdoors,” whose story of public scrutiny and harassment in the wake of tagging the first wolf of Idaho’s first 2009 season is detailed in our March 2010 issue.

Here’s the latest from the Idaho Reporter:

The Idaho House approved a measure which would protect the identity of anyone who purchases any type of hunting license from the state of Idaho.   The vote among House members was 55-14 to approve the measure, which now heads to the Senate.…
Rep. JoAn Wood, R-Rigby, said the responsibility of government is to protect the citizenry from harassment.  Wood said that people have the right to their opinions on wolf hunting, but making bodily threats takes it too far.  She added that protection of citizens is more important than openness of government for newspapers.

A former newspaper publisher, Rep. Steve Hartgen, R-Twin Falls,  said that he has dealt with government privacy issues in the past and debated in opposition to the measure, because he said the legislation “flies in the face” of the state’s constitution.

I plan on using the Freedom of Information Act when I ask for the list of Senators Social Security Numbers next week. At least I would have Rep. Steve Hartgen behind me on the issue! I really want those SS Numbers, if they don't it just "flies in the face of the constitution!"

Base hit, House! Idaho Senate, you're up to bat. The Governor's on deck. Let's bring this bill home! I hope the rest of the states are watching this game.

Okay, time to play devil's advocate. What about all the sportsmen's groups that use Idaho Game and Fish sportsmen's lists to reach out for new members? I know that groups like Safari Club, RMEF, DU, etc routinely purchase the list of license holders from the state so that they can send membership appeals and other information to prospective members.

In many cases sportsmen just aren't aware of all the good work that organizations are doing on their behalf and now it will be even more difficult for non-profits to spread the word. At a time where funding is sparse, this could make things even more difficult.

What was done to purchasers of wolf licenses in Idaho was egregious, no one should face harassment like that. However, I'm concerned about the unintended consequences of legislation like this. I'd rather see a federal bill making it a crime to harass hunters than putting more information behind the walls of secrecy. We have enough of that already.

The big newspapers are the only ones fighting this. They are running articles against it. This is my response on their websites. "The Newspapers are the only groups fighting the hunter protection laws, and I think it’s more to protect their ability to stir the pot and create controversy for a story, than preserving any freedom of information. There is absolutely no good reason to release a Hunters personal info to the public. I tagged the first wolf, and know all to well what the extreme enviro’s are capable of. Maybe if the people against this law had people posting photos of them, their kids, all their contact info, and maps to their homes and work, they would think different. If you want to see first hand how extreme, vile, and crazy these people are, here is a blog I created to post everything sent to me http://www.wolfcomments.blogspot.com . Also, what hunter in his right mind will check a tagged wolf with the Fish and Game, knowing their names will be handed out to the worst domestic terrorist in the country???? Law abiding citizens have a right, to not be subjected to harassment and threats by those who would use such measures to try and force them to change their lifestyle and beliefs. The Number 1 job of the government is to protect it’s citizens, not hand out target lists!!!"

idahooutdoors-Well said!
Experience is probably the best teacher.

I'm digging that picture of you bear-hugging that wolf on your blog ... did you take the picture by yourself?

I just read your story in Field and Stream, and thought it was wonderfully written. Your story beckoned the call of the wild in my most inner parts!

Sometimes though, one has to "count the cost" before setting out on a journey. What a trip you have been through!

Several hunters have been praying for a hedge of protection for you and your family.
We,the hunters, of this once great nation, have a kindred spirit, feel, that you have represented the hunting community well.

May God continue blessing you and your family, as you overcome these obstacles and entanglements.

Keep on blazing new trails!

I second 2Poppa's comments. The article was excellent. Sage Sam makes a valid point, but I think the benefit to the groups like DU, NWTF, etc. is far outweighed by the negative effects of making the names public. These groups have other ways to reach their target audiences.

A +1 for you!

The local rag calls every month wanting me to take their paper and I tell them I will if they put a retraction in the paper on the top front page that they outright lied in a story for saying a Doctor brandished a gun when in fact he didn’t. The individual said he did is a convicted felon for f=drug and gun running, so go figure. But they didn’t care for that; they wanted to sale a paper regardless what harm they do.

I read the F&S story and I can say this to Mr. Millage: thank God you are as articulate and reasonable as you are. You are a real advocate for the gun sports, and I commend you. Like shotgunlou said, we're all behind you!

Glad to hear it. Now hopefully other states will follow suit.

Idahooutdoors Good luck and best wishes to you and yours. Stay safe and you did an outstanding job in defense of yourself and and your family.
By standing tall you made things happen and Idaho's hunters and their families are safer and better off now.
