Hurteau: The Deer Hunter's Quiz

By Dave Hurteau

The National Shooting Sports Foundation was kind enough to send me a copy of the 2009-2010 Industry Reference Guide (available at nssf.org/research/IRG/) which is chock full of fascinating data about hunters and hunting. And so, having all the answers in the palms of my hands, I ask you: How well do you know your fellow deer hunters?

Let’s have a little quiz. Here are five questions that I’ve written based on the information found in this survey. Make your best guesses, then tune in on Wednesday for the answers.

If there were more women that hunted you would see more two person blinds!

mtnhunter, after the last couple turkey seasons, i'm not so sure i am smarter than the turkey.

IMHO turkeys are not smart they just have incredible vision and hearing. If you can sit motionless for long periods of time and use a call you will get your chances to shoot a bird. Provided there are any around.

When the birds outsmart me, like they did this weekend, I blame it on hunter safety--my hunt was safe--for the turkeys. I might be taking hunter safety a little too far.

I consider myself a deer hunter even though I turkey hunt also. I,m surprised I only missed one out of the whole quiz. Some of the questions were quite interesting.

Interesting survey answers here. I was surprised how many people think turkey hunters are better educated than deer hunters. Maybe this is just my experience, but when I'm out deer hunting, I see more turkeys than deer. There are days where I can't seem to get away from them. I'm sure the day I finally managed to draw a turkey tag (we have a lottery system where I live) the two will flip-flop and I'll be overrun with deer without a turkey in sight but for now I see the whitetail as the more elusive animal.

I think the last question should ask if turkey hunters are smarter than turkey.

The first two things that come to mind while reading the responses are...

We do not know what the answers are so people can't know how many they missed.

It doesn't ask if turkeys are smarter than deer or if you have to be smarter than a turkey to hunt them.

I think most believe bird hunters are well healed and therefore smarter. Doesn't mean that it is true, it simply means those who write about bird hunters are better at portraying themselves as more sophisticated.

Interesting that folks consider hog hunters to be lower on the socio-economic scale. In my neck of the woods hog hunting has become a high tech operation... night vision binos and scopes along with sniper rifles ain't cheap! But I digess, there are still some old boys that are quite effective with an H&R Single barrel 12 gauge, a tub of soured corn and a pack of Marlboros...

Beekeeper, from what I seen in Florida you have to pay farmers big money in order to hunt for the pest on their land. While pigs are everywhere down here the places to hunt them on public land is limited. Not to mention the hunting system down here is confusing.

So only people willing to pay over $200 a pig can hunt them from what I have found. That equals me not getting to try to get one yet =(

Let those farmers drown in pigs if they make sportsmen pay to hunt them. NFW I would pay for more than license and lodging to hunt someone else's pest. I know several folks in Montana that love to have me come out and thin out the coyotes and big coyotes, if you see one. LOL

I would more than be willing to pay a fee to hunt pests like hogs and deer and yotes. I just am not willing to spend $100 or more for animal.

I grew up in Central Florida and I can tell you getting permission to hunt private land is nearly impossible there. It's either public land or pay for a lease. I do have an uncle that will let me hunt hogs, deer and turkeys on his cattle ranch. Hogs are considered shoot on sight pests. But why leave a state (Kansas) that is crawling with turkeys and much bigger deer to go to Florida to hunt? Except for the Oceola turkey that makes no sense to me.

Quit complaining, either pay or hunt on public land.

hey bell, quit telling us what to do. There is almost NO public hunting land around in Florida. Also, Florida has zones with each zone having different seasons. So why don't you pay for us?

I share a blind with my wife all the time. She's as good of deer hunter as I am. Try hunting with your wife some time and you might just find out the bond will get stronger!

Spartan,

I feel for you. Georgia is rapidly going the same direction. We have a great many people who come here from Florida and NC to lease hunting land or hunt in our National forest areas and WMA's.

Farmers are facing reduced profit margins and in a state like Florida with limited access and many people with excess dispensible income pay hunts offer a chance to help pay the bills. There will always be a few who are willing to pay more than the next guy, unfortunately those folks keep the rest of us fellows on a hotdog budget on the other side of the fence too frequently.
