Hurteau: Score More Bucks, Win Cabela’s Alaskan Guide Binoculars
By Dave Hurteau

Okay people, here we go again. The fine folks at Cabela’s have generously offered to award the winner of this latest buck-scoring contest a pair of brand-new, phase-coated, roof-prism, waterproof, fogproof, shockproof Alaskan Guide Full-Size Binoculars in your choice of 8x42 or 10x42, which retail for roughly $500 and look like this (click here for more specs).

I know. It’s a great prize. And it too can be yours. All you have to do is score some more bucks. As with the last contest, I will post a picture of a buck each Friday, for one month. You will guess the gross B&C score of each and keep track of your guesses. Again, fractionals will count. On the last Friday, I’ll ask you for your grand total. Whoever is closest wins the binoculars. If there’s a tie, we will have a tiebreaker buck.
Now, I am (as I’m sure many of you are) unabashedly obsessed with antlers. It’s a sickness, I know, but there you have it. I can’t have you thinking, however, that I’m obsessed exclusively with trophy antlers. That, of course, would be immoral.
So this time around, instead of having you guess at P&Y- and B&C-class bucks, let’s see how you do with some smaller racks. And let’s not hear any nonsense about how the shooters should have passed on the “little” bucks pictured. That was up to them, or in the case of the buck above, up to me. I was thrilled to kill this 2-year-old 8-pointer for my first bow buck. And it is the first buck in our contest. (I should point out that none of the bucks I’ll be picturing have official B&C scores. So we hunters will be scoring them ourselves, and you’ll just have to trust us.)
Okay, go for it. What does this buck gross?

No guess here, at least not yet...just a comment. Antler sickness is a known malady. Taught in med school.
The more aggressive the sickness can only lead to trophy obsession. And I agree here, that would be immoral.
Alright Hurt, let the games begin!
nice i love these contests! (even though im about 20 inchs off each time lol) Im going to guess 105

I'll guess 97 5/8
104 is my guess
I like the fact it is not a "classic" pose. It makes it tougher when you can't do the knuckle method. A good reference on this buck would be 7.5 inches from the corner of the eye to the end of the nose.
I'd have to guess about 99". Nice buck and definitely some tasty venison.
Can I guess more than once? I didn't see any rules. I know a 120 is pretty big so I think this one is actually less than 100... no one has said 90 that's my second guesstimate.
110 1/8"

da** nice buck, 991/4
My first bow buck was an 88 inch ten point with a broken tine and a rack about that size. My guess is 79 7/8.
Where i come from, that's considered a big buck. 100" +/-
my guess is 86 3/8. Nice Deer!!!

Nobody congratulated the Big Hurt on his first bow killed buck...so, congrats Hurt, nice buck!

Dr. Ralph,
You can make as many initial guesses for each individual buck as you like, but you get only one final guess. That is, after I post the fourth and last buck, I'll ask you to tally your best guesses for each and give me one--and one only--grand total. That will be about a month from now.
108 1/8.. decent mass and out to his ears.

98 5/8
Of course pictures can be very decieving, 89 7/8

All right Hurteau I am going to have to pull my five big whitetail racks off the wall and measure them all.... this is war! I have no idea what any of them score. I thought I had a 140 until someone showed me a 120. Hmmmmmmm....
92 5/8

I prefer the pass/fail system when judging whitetails. Even the "Monsters" never add up to the big bucks of the Midwest. This is a pass round deez hills.
Im guessing 95 and 7/8
