VIDEO: In Memory of One Fine Duck Dog
By David DiBenedetto
There are 100 days until the opening of duck season in South Carolina. If the incoming gear catalogs haven’t inspired you then here’s a video that will do just that. My friend and avid gun dogger, Wes Chester, showed it to me yesterday, and I’ve watched it at least three times. Why? Because I’m awed by the Lab’s passion, drive, and skill. The trainer was obviously no slouch, either.
I’m not sure there’s anything better than being in a duck swamp with your dog and your hunting buddies when the sky is raining birds—or even when it’s not.
This will be Pritchard’s second duck season, so I’m hoping for an even better dog than last year. But I realize most of that expectation lies with how well I prepare her. In any event, I can’t wait for duck season. (Though dove season should be a blast, too.) And after seeing this video I think you’ll feel the same way.
Good girl, Teal. Rest in peace.

great video—that's some unreal dog work. i can see why she will be missed
DDiB ~ No doubt in my mind Pritch will have an even better year when you put her on ducks in 2010.
Now Teal was something. Great shoulders and the chest spread told me she was quick, very quick. But what spirit! I've had nothing but black labs since 1981 and my oldest now, Tank, is just as amazing in his own way as all the rest.
Two weeks after treein' a bear, he's out in the shallows bringin' a greenhead and droppin' that bird right in my hand. Versatile? Sure, but really only wants to please me.
Dove season is less than a month away for me. You mentioned above, that it "should be a blast too." Dave, you're no doubt a better shot than I 'cause when I'm on dove, it's more like blast, blast, blast, blast!
Thank you for the video. Always appreciated.
great video. there is nothing like the bond between us. really makes you grateful for what we have
Wow...That is an awesome video. Brings goosebumps from watching her work, and kinda that twist in my stomach knowing the bond between a dog and their owner. Didn't help with the end captions. My little sisters are gonna be devastated when Pete and Jade pass.
I got no words.
I have seen this probably a dozen times and it gets better every time you watch it. They did a Waterdog episode that showed some of this from the video. It really makes you appreciate all the times spent with your dogs whether it be training hunting or just a ride in the truck to take the trash off. Good post Dave!
countitandone -- Don't worry...most doves head for my area of the field cause it's usually a safe haven. Tank sounds like a good one. Enjoy him. - Dave
Great video Dave
That brought a tear.
What a great video and tribute to the Labrador Teal! Some great dog work too compared to my half-trained Labradors.
I knew yall would like that one!
one of the best videos yet. what an awesome dog! can't wait to get my lab on some birds!
Amazing video. Reminds me of our dogs. Ready for bird season.
It too reminds me of my dog Magnum ready for this season and all the time put in.
SWEET!!! You went & got me all misty-eyed thinkin about my very first lab 'Moses'...Still love good markin & blind waterfowl work, but on my 4th dog now (all retrievers) & love watching a good combo waterfowl/upland retriever do his flushing thang on wild roosters just about equal! :)
Kudos to Teal! Those locked-on eyes to the sky were priceless!!! RIP...
Nothing harder than losin a dog, a man's best friend for sure. Rest easy, Teal.
Cancer got my two best hunting partners in 2000, one canine and one human. I knew that cancer was gonna get super hunter Delilah and remember her laying on the floor while I built her casket, dreading the day it would be used. Delilah, March 14, 1988 to Feb. 29, 2000.
