How to Make a Camp Coffee Cup

By T. Edward Nickens

In honor of National Coffee Day, we thought we’d share a handy coffee-drinking tip that you can take to hunting camp this season. The tip comes courtesy of our resident “Total Outdoorsman,” editor-at-large T. Edward Nickens.

Durn. You left your mug at home again. But there’s a tall can of beans in the camp cupboard, and a hammer and tin snips in the shed. Get to it.

Step 1: Remove the top and empty and wash the can.

Step 2:
Make a cut around the circumference about 2 inches down, but leave a 1-inch-wide vertical strip of can.

Step 3:
Tap small folds over the sharp edges. Tamp them down smooth so you won’t slice your lips.

Step 4:
Bend the strip down into a handle. Smirk at your buddies while you sip.

I've made "cups" for sipping whiskey the same way out of finished pop/beer cans. A good pocket knife opens it up and cuts tabs. Perfect for when you're away from home and everyone's too scattered and tired around a campfire to pass the bottle.

In a similar vein, if you have an empty water bottle, you can convert it to a cup fairly easily:
Slice the narrow top off with your knife, then run the sharp edge briefly through a flame to melt it smooth.
