Hurteau: Indiana Camper Slashes Throat of Petting-Zoo Buck

By Dave Hurteau

Here are a couple of hypotheticals for you: You sneak up to a grizzly bear and poke it with a stick. Do you have the right to shoot it when it pokes you back? You dive into the shark exhibit at the aquarium. Do you have the right to harpoon the predator when it starts nosing you? And now, for a real-life example:

It is odd there are no charges against this idiot. Why would he have a knife at the ready unless he expected something or wanted to kill the deer all along.

stupid kid that looks like a pretty deliberate cut not really defensive. Either way would of rather see the kid injured badly than the deer killed. ironically they probably would have killed the deer if the kid would of gotten injured or killed. It should be criminal trespass and im sure there is a law against killing live stock...

There's not a week goes by that I don't hear about lesser damage done to a cat in a major city where they are bringing criminal cruelty charges against these offenders and this one doesn't get anything?

This is sad, pathetic, infuriating. If the deer was really trying to attack him he would have been pulverized and wouldn't have had the chance to stab the buck like that. I would prefer that scenario. I can't believe how much this bothers me as an avid killer of deer, but it really does. Good thing for the camper that his name wasn't mentioned.

im with fliphuntr14 it looks like he tride almost as if he jumped on his back and slit its throat and if that deer wouldve attacked him like he claimed he wouldve been hurt very badly and i also agree with koldkut you cant even lightly kick a animal and im just talking anout a nudge without going to jail for animal crualty so why dont he go down for that if there are no charges pressed it just goes to show how hypocritical the law and other people can be and you would think that with all the witnesses that are there they could tell if it was self defense

Reminds me of a trip to the Smokies and Cades Cove some years back. I watched assorted morons as one guy urged his son to drive two very nice bucks closer to the road for a better picture and another fool walked between an old sow and her cub. These people should not be allowed outside the city limits unless accompanied by a responsible guardian. Idiots..............

Its too bad but I think that the zoo could have pursued criminal trespass charges on this guy when he climbed over the fence. Maybe that district attorney should go back to law school. There should be also some charges brought up on the guy through the state fish and game people, so please don't sit here and say there is nothing you can do, you just chose not to like all the other overpaid stupid lawyers in this country. How about Criminal Damage? As a pet it was the owner's property, and he "damaged" it, he trespassed by climbing the fence, and animal cruelty. That's three things he could have been charged with, not to mention Game and Fish laws/regulations [I'm a cop]

For someone to trespass and ultimately kill the animal is outrageous. I hope Andrew Sweet is charged and fined. All for what, a picture to brag about?? You can't fix stupid.

As many of you have pointed out already, Mr. No-brains has certainly trespassed and also took away a form of income for the family who owned the buck. I’m sure many families choose that campsite because of its “petting zoo”. All of these offenses are punishable by hefty fines and jail time in most states. If I crawled over your fenced in backyard just to get a closer look at your “cool” pet dog, and I then killed your pet dog without any justifiable cause I would not only be heftily fined but also jailed, even if only for a short while. So what is the definition of a Pet? I would certainly say even though this is a “wild” animal, because he was enclosed, and I’m sure the owners had proper paperwork to have the animal, that would qualify him as a pet. So in Indiana I can go and kill a person’s pet and there are minimal if any repercussions? Look out Pet owners in Indiana, or better yet, that neighbor’s dog that’s always barking in the middle of the night, now you know its okay for you to “handle” the situation as you see fit.
