Hurteau: Roadside Bruin Takes Down Big Velvet Buck

By Dave Hurteau

Seen this one yet? Although the origin remains uncertain—like so many of these things--word is it went down in Wood County, Wisconsin, and the buck was hit by a car before it was disemboweled by the bear. Bad day.

Anyone know any more about these pics? There are more shots of the attack over on Outdoor Life's site.

I believe its from Warren County Pa, or so the OL site says, and had seen it on HUNTINGPA.COM before I saw it anywhere else. Who is to say all of that is correct as well.

Here is a website that offers more pictures
www.mikehanback.com/blog/index.cfm/2010/8/24/More-Velvet-Road-Kill-Bear-... which purportedly came from Warren Co., PA. If you are interested in taking a look. I wonder how often bears eat deer??

This is just a wild guess, but that buck might be vehicle wounded & the bear is just taking advantage of the situation. That bear looks a little small to have taken that buck down on it's own, and a roadside ambush ... well, his name may not be Yogi, but he'd have to be a lot dumber than the average bear to hunt the roadside for anything but roadkill.

That buck probably had 2 or more broken legs from a car hit. I found a big 8 pointer like that here in KS last fall. There is a photo of the buck in my files. The car had broken both hind legs at the hocks and he could not run. Local police put him down and issued a salvage tag. I have the antlers and donated the meat. Such a deer would be easy prey for any predator that comes along.

I got the complete thread weeks ago and it did say the buck had been hit. Someone in law enforcement should have put that buck down immediately.

Yep its definetly a bad day for that nice buck. But probably the best day ever for that little bear. I wonder if he took the rack from the buck and hung it on his cave wall to show off?

Bucky and his buddy Bruno, watched excitedly when the 6PM news came on. They just knew their roadside antics would finally get them on TV without being the subject of a hunters success!

I saw a similar thing with a moose and a grizzly a few years ago in Northwestern Alberta. Moose was hit and grizzly came to the road and drug it into the bush still kicking.

Black bear will eat any deer that they find and will kill fawns if they find them. I don't believe that a Blackie could catch a healthy deer but I don't know this for a fact.

As an avid hunter and fisherman I have tremendous respect for the outdoors and always try to do the ethical thing. I hate seeing deer suffer after being hit by vehicles and more importantly I hate to see people get injured in deer related car accidents. This photo/article should be sent to everyone we know especially those nonhunters who call guys like myself bad people for killing innocent animals.

Tough day for that nice buck, but its better than it laying in the ditch injured. I personally shot a 7 pt buck last year that had been hit by a car. The deer was a half mile off the road with a broken leg and exhausted from dragging itself that far. Terrible thing to see in the wild.

Great buck. Great photos. Mother Nature at her finest...or worst. Either way it was a tough day for that buck. That bear can't be more than 100#. Saw one that size last weekend was surprised Mom wasn't along.
