Suburban Dove Hunting Not So Well-Received in California

By Chad Love

Dove hunting in the suburban areas surrounding the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex? Yeah, they're cool with that. Dove hunting in Fresno, California? Not so much...

From this story  in the Merced Sun-Star:
The start of dove hunting season shortly before daybreak Tuesday prompted "continual" calls to Fresno County Sheriff's Office dispatchers, and deputies responded to about 12 calls of close gunfire, pellets hitting homes and buildings or trespassing, said Lt. Jeff Johnson. There is a no-shoot zone around Fresno and Clovis city limits and hunters must be 150 yards away from occupied dwellings

So much for that "dove hunting as a spectator sport thing."

Well you would think in California they would just be used to hearing gunfire. As for the pellets hitting the houses...well the hunters needed to be farther away then they were. Im sure someone will throw a fit and make this a bigger deal then it was.

You know one of the F&S writers made a comment about PETA not really having any influence and that they were just a fringe group. Well, if hunters were shooting so close to homes that shot would land on the house's and they were walking in residence yards. Then PETA doesn't sound as much of a lunatic fringe group as the "hunters" who display poor judgement and lousy sportsmanship.

that's kind of like the urban moose hunt in anchorage, ak a few years back. people walked out of their houses and found wounded animals, and gut piles in their yard and arrows in their siding. WTF! we have to be more responsible than that or we will get eaten up by the antis!

I have a feeling there is more to this than what is told in this article. First I have a feeling that these hunters were hunting within the laws limits. I think it is people that don't like hunting, the noise, or just in a bad mood. I have had first hand experience with this duck and goose hunting. We have a spot on the river with a few houses behind us. These to a-holes think we're in the city limits and have called the game warden on us several times saying we're shooting towards their house and can here pellets hitting their windows. The funny thing is it would be impossible for us to hit their houses with shot, because we are shooting the opposite direction and there are woods betweeen us and them not to mention we can't shoot straight up unless we want tree branches to fall on our heads. Did I mention the houses are a hundred yards away. These 2 guys have now started lighting off fireworks since the game warden told them to quit calling because we are allowed to hunt there and have no way of shooting their houses unless we walk into their backyards. I can't wait for it this year because we are going to call the police on these a-holes when they start lighting off fireworks towards us. Note it is illegal to ignite any explosive in the state of Ohio, not to mention shooting them towards people intentionally!

Not to be a nit-picker, Dcast, but I hope igniting SOME explosives in Ohio is legal, since isn't that the process that propels a bullet from a gun? Anyhoo, maybe the people in this story are like your neighbors, maybe they have a legitimate gripe. If they're like your neighbors, the truth will absolve the hunters. If they have a legit gripe, then shame on those who wielded the guns. We all have a responsibility to represent hunting well and failing to be careful does the exact opposite.

i agree with dcast, you must be in the south lol, thats pretty much how it is down here. the law is a 100 yrds away from a residence with a shotgun and 300 yrds with a rifle. my personal dove field is 100 yrds away from a trailer park, and im here to tell you...they will be hearin shot hittin their roofs tomorrow evenin (openin day for doves). as far a california goes, they need an earthquake to go on a dislodge them from the u.s. they aint worth a dang no way...that was a waste of land...and skin.

I lived in California for 3 years. Worst 3 years of my life. the people as a whole are the rudest I've ever met. The hunting is good, if you can afford a tag - an out of state buck tag in Colorado is about the same as an in-state california tag. Elk is another story all together.

If I lived in California, I'd probably be mad AND rude!
Been out there a couple of times. The part of California I liked best was the East bound lane of IH10!
But of course, that's the part of Houston, Texas I like, the north bound lane of IH45!!

Aint

Dictionary usage

Although widely disapproved as nonstandard and more common in the habitual speech of the less educated.

My point also spell check on your computer wont recignize it and "d'oh" is in the dictionary so that doesn't really prove a point.

Jakenbake, if you were to take a shotgun shell outside and blow it up(not shoot it) it is considered an explosive, so fireworks, pipebombs, worxbombs,ect... are illegal not ammunition unless detonating in a manner that is not consistent with its purpose. It just like gun powder, you can go outside and lite it all day long, until you put it into a container that will create an explosion when ignited.
