Mexican Pirates Fire at Couple on Texas Lake, Man Feared Dead
By Chad Love
Remember this blog post about American bass anglers being robbed by Mexican drug gang members while fishing Texas' Falcon Lake? Things appear to be getting much, much worse.
From this story on ABC News:
Search teams are combing a Texas lake for the body of a man who was allegedly shot and killed by Mexican pirates when he and his wife were ambushed after crossing into Mexican waters on their personal watercraft. David Michael Hartley, 30, and his wife Tiffany Hartley, 29, were attacked on Falcon Lake, near the southern tip of Texas, police said. Tiffany Hartley told police her husband was shot in the back of the head as the couple fled to U.S. waters. The gunmen are suspected to be Mexican pirates who have been marauding on the lake, law enforcement officials said.
Hartley fell off his watercraft after he was shot, according to his wife, who told rescuers and police she attempted to circle back to save him, but the gunmen were still firing shots so she had to abandon the rescue attempt. Texas Department of Public Safety officials said Friday they believed that David Hartley was dead, but his body has yet to be found. U.S. Border Patrol spokesman Narcizo Ramos told The Associated Press that he didn't know whether Mexican authorities were searching their side.
According to Zapata County Sheriff Sigifredo Gonzalez Jr., Tiffany Hartley said she and her husband were returning to U.S. waters after sightseeing and taking photos when they saw armed men aboard some boats. The couple "observed some boats coming at them at a pretty high rate of speed, noticed that some of the boats were armed so they immediately started, according to her, revving it up and gassing it up to the U.S, side of the border to prevent them getting hurt," he said. "Then, of course, shots started being fired at them. She said she was seeing bullets hitting close to her in the water and realized that her husband had been hit behind the head," he said. "She went back trying to find, trying to help him. She went in the water trying to load up her husband to her Jet Ski ... trying to get his body and Jet Ski back to the U.S. side.

The only reaction possible is sorrow and anger. That it should come to this in our own waters is unbelievable.
At this point, I honestly think we only have two options with the war on drugs.
A: Recall our military from overseas and deploy them to the border because that's the kind of force it's going to take.
B: Legalize drugs. Sounds crazy, but remember Prohibition. Al Cappone wouldn't have had the opportunity to build a criminal empire around alcohol, if alcohol hadn't been illegal. You might say that legalizing drugs means more people will use them, but clearly the fact that they are illegal isn't stopping anyone who really wants to use them now. The American military is strong but it's American capitalism that's taken over the world, and if Proctor & Gamble started selling heroin the drug gangs would be finished.
"ambushed after crossing into Mexican waters"
Sounds like they had no right to be where they were. If this had happened on the U.S. side then by all means open up a can on the mexicans.
Elkslayer, so its ok to shoot and kill someone for crossing the border?
Then I guess we should have open season on millions of mexicans here illegaly?
I guess its time to do what we all know needs to be done!
this seems like a perfect time to show this email my mom sent me.

So much political rhetoric, so little time. I'm shaking my head. Forgive me if I misunderstand. Your argument is that because other foreign countries treat immigrants like vermin, we should too? Not that America should be the shining beacon of hope to all the world, but... what, exactly?
Anyway, this isn't even an "immigration issue" story. It's a drug violence story. And I'm very much FOR military intervention. Too many lives have been lost, American or otherwise, to such tyranny. It's time we enforce peace on our borders for the safety of our citizens.
Muley,
That sort of argument seems to come up all the time when we are discussing torture, capitol punishment and immigration, and I've never understood it. Are you inferring that we should be more like 3rd World despotic countries? That because Saudi Arabia does something, so should we?
I would never, ever choose to live in any of those countries over the good o'l US of A. Why on earth would I use them as a metric to judge our policy?
And I agree with dotcom, this story isn't a border issue, nor is it an immigration issue. It happened on Mexican "soil".
its a border lake the border is drawn through it. I heard about this while i was in Texas in the spring. There are mexicans pirating boats around the lake. The lake has bass tournaments on it as its a great fishery and a man i talked to told me he and others were worried about fishing the tournament this spring while i was down there he did without a problem
Flip,
I get that. It's my understanding though that all these incidents keep happening on the Mexican side of the lake. Unless these pirates are crossing the border, I don't understand how it's a border issue. And to bring up illegal immigration is a complete non-sequiter.
With that said, this seems like a really opportunity for some US Marine gunboats to get some target practice.
The solution. Shoot back. It is a shame that man was shot.
i say open seson on drug dealers
idduckhntr has it right. the mexican gvt is corrupt and inept at solving these issues. these murders need to be shot on the waters or strung up
I want to offer my sincere condolences to Ms. Hartley for the loss of her husband. I hope that his body is found and laid to rest. As for the monsters that did it, they will get their judgment one day. I hope they are caught and brought to justice here in the USA.
Also, whether or not it happened in Mexican water or not is a non-issue. The fact is it was MURDER. Borders are charted by man made law, but murder crosses a higher law.
Sounds like we need to stick some "bait" boats out on our side of the border, and stick a couple SEAL teams in them, and if the Pirates cross over to try and attack them....well your imagination can fill in the rest...Mexico is a problem we've been ignoring for to long, I have Several friends down there, and they say the average Mexican citizen is powerless to defend themselves thanks to Mexico's strict gun laws...we need to find a way to better empower the average Mexican citizen so they can take their country back, and hang the Drug Kingpins and Corrupt Politicians from the trees...
Hey Dcast
You made my point exactly. It is time to open season on those who enter our country illegally. I only pointed out that this american couple commited the exact crime that i despise illegal immigrant mexicans for committing.
part of the problem is that under normal conditions both countries citizens can fish the lake, these pirates have become very bold. i do not advocate shooting first, but there is nothing wrong with self defense. As to the drug legalization question, I have mixed feelings. I think with the corruption so great south of the boarder, it will be these drug cartels that will benefit. What is needed is massive show of force, and that does not seem to be high on the administrations agenda, since it would mean enforcing existing laws, something they seem allergic to.
"he didn't know whether Mexican authorities were searching their side"
Is it really that hard to communicate and/or see a bunch of search boats in the water?
Nate
Why would you take the chance in the first place?? Crossing into Mexico illeagly on jet skis , thrillseeking and sightseeing is sadly, asking for it! I feel bad for them but with all the killings by drug gangs and to still chance it anyhow; Duhhh!
Crossing in the water is not illegal, as long as you don't dock on the other side. I used to live in NY, and Lake Ontario is shared with Canada, and it is perfectly legal to enter Canadian waters as long as you are not docking on the other side, but you can if you go through a proper harbor port and check in with their Customs Agents. The lakes are considered shared and are usable by both countries that shared the lake, otherwise there would be a fence or some other type or restricting border along the water border too. And I'm not indicating that I'm anti-fence; I live in AZ and wished we had a better fence even electric if possible. We could have an electric fence powered by solar power, but sadly we do not. The admin hasn't even helped with our problem here, they just put up signs to restrict citizens from area with drug smugglers. And for those who thing illegal immigration is a separate thing from drug smuggling you are thinking in the past, current illegals care drugs to get across now, that is how they pay for their guides and crossing supplies.
