Would You Shoot a Locked-Up Buck?
By Dave Hurteau
Your average locked-up buck is in no position to flee a pursuer (especially if it’s dragging around a dead former rival). So it’s tough to categorize this situation as fair chase. On the other hand, you could probably call it a mercy. A hopelessly locked-up deer is pretty much coyote bait—and being eaten alive can’t be much fun.
Check out this video to see how Rodney Hurst of Hixton, Wisconsin, recently handled the situation. Did he do the right thing? What would you do? --Dave Hurteau
