Video: Ever Wonder How Fly Line is Made? Wonder No More
By Joe Cermele
I was poking around YouTube the other day and found this video produced by Rio a couple years back. Maybe you've seen it, but I hadn't, and given that I could watch monotonously-narrated shows that tell you how pencils, bridge cables, or golf balls are made for hours on TV, imagine my delight when I found this behind-the-scenes look at how fly line is made. Make snore sounds if you like, but it's pretty interesting. Consider it your chemistry, physics, and science lesson for the day.

Didn't watch it, but know that RIO's computorized line maker that they just punch in the coordinates, and set the run for the line they mfger costs mucho dineros..well over a million bucks for the machine. And that's why flylines cost so much today...one of the reasons. And they guard their info like Fort Knox. No windows, doors bolted shut, and no one unauthorized is allowed in.
And speaking of flylines..did anyone see where ORVIS bought out Scientific Angler flylines and Ross Reels that had been sold previously to Scientific Anglers? And they re-hired a guy that gave me a flycasting lesson one time, and what a valuable lesson it was. The man behind Scientific Anglers line designs that had retired, Bruce Richards, that has now been rehired by Orvis.
