Can You Use Bug Spray In Place of Starter Fluid? Nope

By Joe Cermele

When your outboard is acting up, don't try this. Although—as the gentlemen in the video point out—bug spray is flammable, "redneck ether" will not get the motor back up and running.

yeh, it's funny to watch but that video is a set-up (phony)

all 3 guys instantly dive in the water?

and the guy at the wheel looks like he's putting on a show for the camera

and why would anyone even be videoing this scene in the first place?

the explosion simply sounds like a firecracker

hate to be a party pooper, but.....

Never Spray any starting aid before the engine is turning, this is why this explosion happened. We use Either to clean engines in my families diesel repair shop but rarely to start an engine. If you must use a starting ad you do want to people to apply correctly. One guy turns the engine over and after it starts turning over spray the starting fluid, then stop before they stop cranking the engine. What causes the explosion is when the spray settles in the intake piping and then you crank on the engine and the puddle in the intake pipe is ignited and then you have a loud bang!
