Rare Stuff: Paddlefish Through The Ice

By Joe Cermele

Correct me if I'm wrong on this one, but paddlefish are filter feeders. That's why the only way for you to catch one in states with legal paddlefish seasons is to snag it. It's not going to hit a spoon or a jig or a worm. Yet, the kid in this video nails two paddles through the ice, and the best I can tell, his lines are in the fishs' mouths. It doesn't look like they just kinda bumped into his hooks. What do you think? Do know something about paddlefish I don't? Will they hit a lure or bait on occasion?

Paddlefish will take a pelleted feed. They might have been from a hatchery.

We have caught them in the mouth below dams in Kentucky while drifting for rock bass.
