Hook Your Valentine With These 12 Lures

A Guest Post By Assistant Editor Kristyn Brady

Realistically, I know that the average guy or girl is not likely to seal the deal with that special someone on Valentine’s Day by presenting the object of their affection with soft plastics or a hand-tied nymph. (Please, please, don’t chuck the usual candy, flowers, or tickets to WWE Smackdown based on my advice.)

But if your sweetheart matches one of the descriptions below, try letting the gift of tackle say how you feel. You just might be a dynamic duo in time for better weather and great fishing in one of the twelve destinations we’ve suggested for putting these lures and flies to use. Wherever you decide to use them this season, be sure to work in a romantic non-fishing adventure in the same area, especially if your gift fails to impress today—we'll get you started:

1 - Matzuo’s Swagger Shad in Hot Firetiger: For the guy who has swagger like Jagger

This spring, plan a trip to Cleveland and throw the Swagger Shad to Lake Erie smallmouth bass or walleyes. Be sure to check out the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and a few of the live music spots downtown. We recommend the Grog Shop.

The Sewer: For All Your Live Bait Needs

    By Joe Cermele

Let me preface this video by saying that it could be complete hoopla. At the same time, the idea that there are fish living in the sewers doesn't seem too far fetched. I don't know where these kids live, or how close to a body of water with lots of fish, but unless this is fake, it seems they've got all the live bait they need at the end of their driveway. If I lived there, I'd send down a live bluegill, leave it overnight, and see if some freakishly huge flathead was hiding in that hole.

College Student Invents a New Style of Rod Holder

    by Joe Cermele

When I was in college, the only things I invented were new ways to make a guitar amplifier sound louder and crunchier, and new reasons to skip class to go fishing. Perhaps if I had studied biological systems engineering like Justin Vannieuwenhoven (left) instead of journalism, I too would have been on my way to being a noted inventor in the fishing world before walking at graduation.

Vannieuwenhoven, a senior at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, recently won top honors at the school's annual Innovation Days competition. His self-adjusting fishing rod holders not only earned him the Schoofs Prize for Creativity, but also a cool $10K, per this story in the UWM News

Vintage Tackle Contest: The Common Sense Fly Box

    By Joe Cermele

A few weeks ago we had an old fly with a cool story in the vintage tackle contest, so this week why not a fly box? This gem was entered by Charlie Krause, who found the box in an assortment of old fly tying stuff that belonged to the father a friend. According to Dr. Todd Larson of The Whitefish Press and "Fishing For History" blog, what Charlie has here is a box better than most of the ones hanging for sale in fly shops today.

What Could Maine's "Rubber Lure" Ban Mean for the Future of Fishing?

    By Joe Cermele

In case you haven't heard, Maine is trying to pass a bill that would ban the use of "rubber lures" throughout the state. At this time, however, what constitutes a "rubber lure" has not yet been defined. The fishing world assumes this refers to soft-plastic lures, and I can't imagine that it wouldn't. If you read this article from 2009 on Examiner.com, you'll learn that Maine is claiming discarded soft-plastic lures are potentially harming the environment because it can take "more than 200 years" for them to break down, and they have not-so-good effects on fish that ingest them. What worries me is not the ban of these lures in just one state, but the ideas the passing of this bill could put in the heads of the powers that be in other states.

Dizm Eyewear: Because You Want To See Fish and Look Retro 80s

    By Joe Cermele

On the left side of my hacked self portrait, I'm standing in a frigid trout stream in eastern Pennsylvania. On the right, I'm about 1,500 miles away on the flats of Key West, Florida. The Eco Dempsey shades from Dizm Eyewear stuck on my face are the glue. If you're going to give me a pair of glasses reminiscent of those worn by Tom Cruise in "Risky Business" and tell me the polarization is top shelf, I won't take your word for it; I'll fish them in as many environments as I can and see how they stack up. And though it might seem more likely to find these particular glasses on the counter at the surf shop instead of the tackle shop, I must admit they fished quited well.

A Zebco 33 Combo Can Take More Heat Than You Think

    By Joe Cermele

For the last few days I've been bumming around Key West with some friends from Quantum, and fishing with some renowned anglers in these parts like Robert "R.T." Trosset, who probably has led more clients to IGFA line-class records than any other captain in the states. In other words, the man knows how to handle very mad, very fast fish on very light line, so it stands to reason that when a challenge was issued involving a Zebco 33 combo in the bluewater, R.T. (below) won with ease.

Old Fishing Gear Just as Good as the New Stuff

    By John Merwin

I review and report on lots of new fishing tackle over the course of a year. Some reels and rods are inevitably much improved, and I love the technical innovations. But I occasionally think that maybe I’m too enamored of new things. So what about the old stuff?

In pondering this, I decided I could be perfectly happy fishing with the same things I was using 20 years ago. In fact, some of the “old stuff” doesn’t seem old at all and still functions perfectly. Here are some examples:

What Qualifies A Lure As An All-Time Great?

    By Joe Cermele

Recently posted on the site is an article by my good friend and extreme die-hard surfcaster Jimmy Fee, in which he names his picks for the 25 greatest striper surf lures of all time. As a surfcaster myself, I'd say the list is pretty spot-on, even though he left out the Ava Diamond Jig (sorry, dude. I had to). Ribbing aside, what makes the list so complete, I think, is the criteria used to select these lures. You have to put personal favoritism aside and look not just at a lure's catching power, but what part it played in the overall development of the category of lures at hand, as well as its historical role in growing the sport.
