Dream Stream Area May Be Named After Charlie Meyers
By Kirk Deeter
Here's an update that really warmed my heart. As you know, the great outdoors writer Charlie Meyers passed away last month. Whether you knew Charlie personally or not, his work, which spanned a remarkable 43 years at the Denver Post, made a lasting impact for all of us who appreciate the wild outdoors. Now the Colorado Division of Wildlife is proposing a worthy and permanent tribute--renaming a section of the Spinney Mountain Ranch State Wildlife Area, which contains one of the West's most popular trout fisheries we now call The Dream Stream, "The Charlie Meyers State Wildlife Area." You can see the proposal here (in .pdf form).

I'd say that's a slam dunk. My hat is off to Colorado Division of Wildlife Director Tom Remington and his colleagues for doing the right thing for the right reasons. I had the very good fortune to fish this water with Charlie often. It is a place he held sacred. And I get goose bumps thinking about the day I get to go back there and fish in "Charlie's River." You know, Charlie didn't have the family fortune to will a vast ranch to Colorado. But he left a very powerful legacy of advocating for fishing, and protecting places we now enjoy... one that can't be measured in acres. I cannot help but think if you get a chance to fish in this area, you'll get exactly the impression of what Charlie Meyers was all about.
You can help to make this happen by voicing your support in an E-mail to wildlife.comm@state.co.us. Thanks.
Deeter

Outstanding and an extremely proper tribute. Unfortunately I did not know Mr Meyers but his articles have helped me out immensely over the past few years and were always enjoyable to read..I definatley miss logging on to the Denver post and checking out his latest news. I have found myself re-reading older ones in the archive though.....Will send a support email right now to CDOW...thanks for the update
Kudos to the DOW. I hope this does not further the anti-spinfisher sentiment there.
that's a beautiful photograph.

thanks Evan
you're welcome, Tim.
A fitting tribute to a good man. I am sure he will smile down on these waters for eternity.

This is fantastic on CDOWs part. Dream Stream is an absolutely amazing stretch of river and I think that it is very fitting of an absolutely amazing writer and human being. While I didnt know Charlie peronally, i can imagine that he is smiling down on those big hump back browns right now. Thanks for bringing this to our attention Tim....sending email right now.
This is the main reason I visit this website. That is one of the most beautiful photos I have ever seen.
very cool
Blackdawgz..Yep really a nice photo..The great thing is that I get to fish that amazing piece of land..Plenty of days you can see pronghorn, eagles and huge persnickity (at least for me lol) trout...I still remember the feeling when I finally got a football sized rainbow to hit a fly and it took off like a 338 RUM on steroids... The reservoir near there (11 mile reservoir) is here I caught my first trout ever. Early mornings the huge brown trout jump in the water splashing down and if you look up there are usualy shooting stars..The piece of the South Platte would make an excellent rememberence to Mr Meyers
CDOW sent a response to my email......."Jeff,
Thanks for taking the time to weigh-in on the renaming a portion of the Spinney Mountain State Wildlife Area in Charlie's honor. As Charlie was an avid angler, this portion of the Spinney Mountain SWA situated along the "Dream Stream section of the south Platte River between Spinney and Eleven mile state parks, seems a fitting tribute.
This will be on the agenda for the 02/11/2010 Wildlife Commission Meeting.
I bet it happens
Sorry I wrote the ..I bet it happens part... don't won't to misrepresent what cdow wrote
Oh... it'll happen. I appreciate your good comments hengst, and all the others too. It is, indeed, a wonderful photograph. A wonderful place... through which we can all remember a wonderful man. Thanks to all of you. KD
I've landed more big trout on that streach of river than anywhere else in my lifetime. I am sure that this is true for many other anglers out there. Kudos to the CDOW!
What a wonderful thing to happen. There is/was no more worthy person in Colorado to earn this, and no more appropriate tribute. Charlie was the written soul of the outdoors here. It's only fitting. Makes me want to fish there, even more.
I look forward to hearing that this has happened, and look forward to visiting the "Charlie Meyers State Wildlife Area" with my favorite fisherman!
Imagine trying to paddle up that stream? So much zig zag just looking at it make me sea sick!
Great Idea!
There are only a hand full of outdoor writers worthy of that honor, Charlie Meyers is among them.
