BuckTracker: Alabama Dreamin’
By Scott Bestul
Last weekend—seated comfortably in an Alabama box blind overlooking a food plot on a sunny, pleasant afternoon—I couldn’t resist text-messaging a buddy back in the Midwest.
“How is the weather back in paradise?” I queried, feigning innocence.
“Stupidly cold. How ‘bout you?” was Ted’s too-good-to-pass response.
“Well I’m sure glad there’s a roof on this blind to keep the darn sun off me.” I replied, unable to resist.
My friend will undoubtedly get me for that remark. We’re slogging through an epic winter in the upper Midwest, and joking about weather is only way to bear it. And my Alabama hunt revealed another first; the place I traveled to hunt was 80 degrees warmer than home….and I actually liked that. When I left Alabama on Tuesday temps were pushing 75. Two-plus hours later on my plane’s approach to Minneapolis, the flight attendant somewhat cruelly reminded us that the thermometer was several notches below zero.
Sigh. I did not kill a deer, but I did escape an ice-box winter for a few days and that was surely enough. Had a wonderful time, ate some great southern cooking (okra for the first—but not last—time), and basked in hospitality. I’ll come back any time I’m invited.
One of my compadres did shoot the fine buck picutred and two does while the rest of our crew went deerless. None of us cared a bit, because back home looks a lot like the scene in the photo below.
So how’s the winter in your neck of the woods?

Thats a nice late season buck. Who would be out to take a pic like that of the does?
Nice buck from Alabama! They may not grow as big down there as they do in the Midwest, but the mild winters and the chance to escape the 20 degree weather for a few days is totally make up for that. Besides, you never know when a Monster will pop out onto that green field about 100 yards from you. What part of the state were you hunting?
THE PICTURE OF THE 2 DOES ARE FROM AROOSTOOK COUNTY MAINE,THIS IS WHERE THOUSANDS OF DEER PARISHED DUE TO A EXTREMELY HARD WINTER.
Now THAT'S what I'm talkin' about!!! Does it get any better than that? Well, does it?!!
bitter cold here in pa. just had two days off of school in a row due to horrible ice, snow and cold. right now there is white out just out side my window and it lookds like we're gonna get snowed in.
i'm freezin
Great buck and congrats on the meat deer (does) as well. Where's the picture of the slick heads? Anyway, this may be a little off of the subject, but where in the heck is Bill Heavey? Is he off on sabatical? did he freeze polar bear hunting? go on a binge? Nothing against any of the other writers because they are great, but I need to hear about someone else's blunders besides my own every once in a while.
Maybe I should look for Heavey on the FSHuntress blog...
way too warm in this part of colorado and very little snow. i'm from alaska so this is killing me! not enough snow and too warm on the west slope this year during deer and elk season as well. still waiting for winter.
congragulations on a hunt even without a kill and on eatong okra, how did you get it served? Fried is my favorite and as a kid I would eat a whole box of it by myself and still do on occasion
There is nothing like hunting in the South!
cool pic of the does
That is why I live in the south! You never hear of anyone retiring to the North!
sometimes just getting away from it all is the BEST part of it.
Getting ready for spring turkey season :)
Nate
