BuckTracker: What’s Up in Sioux Falls?

By Scott Bestul

Ok, is Sioux Falls, South Dakota, the home of a nuclear site I don’t know about? Several weeks back I posted photos of (and a video link to) a giant whitetail sent to me by Sioux Falls resident Bill Corbet. That monster buck had been filmed in velvet and photographed in hard antler living happily in a no-hunting zone within the city limits.

So when a pic of a huge buck—one that had been (reportedly) killed by a vehicle in Sioux Falls—landed on my desk this week, I jumped to the hasty assumption that Bill Corbet’s buck was dead. But when I called Corbet to offer my condolences, he said “if he’s dead I haven’t heard about it. Last I know he was alive and well. Send me the picture you’ve got.”

Well I did, and Bill called me back minutes later. “Not him,” he said, obviously relieved. “Compare that buck’s rack to the one I sent you. There’s no way that’s the same deer.” And of course Bill is right, a fact proven by comparing nothing more than the right sides of these two tremendous racks.

Alright, I get the big-metro-buck thing up and down. They can’t be hunted (or hunted much), so they grow older. But even when bucks grow old they don’t always sprout antlers like these two giants. Which brings us to the conclusion that there is one incredible gene pool in this slice of the world…or a nuke plant I’m unaware of.

If they ever changed it to a hunting zone there would be a tree stand every 10 ft!

You know, if I were you I would check the photo's of the Rompola Buck that was shot by Mitch and claimed to rival the Hansen Buck for the world record about four years ago. Looks like the same buck to me. Check the full story with the Traverse City Record Eagle. Be nice to know either way, also it would be nice to find out the real story behind the Rompola buck and why it was never scored. Thanks and keep up the great work!

Pretty nice bucks. If that ever becomes a hunting zone ther'll be a hunter every 5 feet. Have seen nicer bucks than that in Iowa though. Something about that state makes them grow some very nice deer. Looking for property there now and can hopefully find some.

The Rampola buck dwarfs either of those bucks and besides, the Rampola buck is widely considered a fake. Mitch has never allowed it to be officially scored or even allow the skull to be examined. Whitetails don't get 38 inch spreads, especially in Grand Traverse County, MI.

on the subject of big bucks in non hunting locations, when I was in AIT at Edgewood, MD for the army there were quite a feew of the biggest bucks I had ever seen. They used to test chemical things there and these bucks were monsters! If you have ever been up around Aberdeen or Edgewood Maryland and can get on base you should deffinatelly try and check it out

What county and may I ask why are you selling, and what terms do you have if any for the property

It's in Clarke county. Want to puke at the thought of selling it but a recent divorce has put a hurt on the purse strings. All or nothing as far as terms go.

Click my name and see the Kansas buck a poacher shot at night with a rifle and nightscope. I saw that rack in person and took the pic at the KS Bowhunter's Assn. annual meeting last Feb. He is a hog.
