Bowhunters Cut Deer/Vehicle Collisions

From Iowa’s The Gazette:

In 2004, before the city of Cedar Rapids began the bowhunt, there were 453 deer-vehicle crashes.

In 2008, [there were] 250 . . . .

"In my opinion, bowhunters have made an impact in the last three years," [an official] said.

"The number (of deer-vehicle crashes in the city) has reduced every year since the hunt started."

Just helps prove what bowhunters all ready know....if you let us hunt in urban areas, we can help reduce the number of deer in that given area for a lot cheaper than if the city had gone with the approach of hiring sharp shooters like many other cities around the nation think is the best approach.

It is nice to know that people actually are starting to recognize the benefits of hunters. It is nice to be recognized for something other than poaching and how cruel we are.

Good to hear. Been hearing mixed results from bow hunts in other communities.

My town has one of the highest auto/deer accident rates in the country. At dusk last night a couple of deer crossed a busy road in front of me. A family in a van decided to stop and watch the deer - in the middle of the road! They almost got tail-ended.

The city decided to hire police sharpshooters (rifle) to reduce the deer herd at night. None of this was in neighborhoods - there are plenty of wooded lots that hold deer. Initial efforts were to reduce the herd by 200. They got 20 before the outcry from bleeding hearts and those concerned with using rifles brought it to a halt. Now a new team has been formed to try to address this. I'll pass this along. Bow hunting is definitely a safe viable option. Perhaps they'll consider this rather than chastity belts.

To all the deer trampled municipalities - I'm for hire. All I ask is gas money, and compensation for all the arrows and broadheads I'd burn through.

Should send a copy of this to NJ Gov. Jon Corzine. Great to see hunters recognized as part of the Solution.

in anchorage they tried the bowhunting thing to reduce the moose population. the first year was a disaster! people walked out of their houses and found gut piles and wounded animals in their yards. they then noticed the arrows sticking in their siding. the city decided to try it again with more specific rules and now it works really well.

but it isn't just the bow hunters alone, i think that it is about 50 50 of bow and gun hunters taking down the deer car collisions. another reason why my dad says that car insurance agencies should sponsor deer hunters

Glad to see some common sense in this world taking place. It is amazing how the deer are no longer "helpless" and cute when they are eating somebodies garden plants or decorative shrubs. The almighty dollar when it comes to collisions speaks for itself. I have never understood why when you have people willing to pay licience fees and contribute to the economy you would choose to pay a government employee to do it. Colorado has elk problems that they won't deal with like Cedar Rapids does and it just is hurting everyone involved.

Had a Anti hunter say during deer season more deer are hit by cars. I asked, when did this happen, was it daylight or dark and the lady said dark. So I explained to her about the rut deer chasing each other around and the legal hours of hunting that no hunting is allowed at night and deer are mostly nocturnal critters.

And the scariest thing happened, SHE GOT IT!

By golly, there’s intelligence out dar after all!!

Why hasn’t anyone done an article, in 1906, President Theodore Roosevelt established the Grand Canyon National Game Preserve on the Kaibab Plateau and the effect of?

I myself am a bow hunter for hire. All I ask is that the animal not go to waste. I never have stood for poaching and I never will, I was raised to eat what I kill....
