Deer Hunter’s Honor Roll
By Scott Bestul
Nick Owens didn’t set out to do a good deed. He was just driving toward a tract of public land on the fourth day of Wisconsin’s firearms season. Then he noticed a young lady dressed in blaze orange. She was crying, her head cradled in one hand, the other clutched a cell phone. Owens pulled up, fearing the woman was in trouble.
Turns out the lady had shot at a deer, but her boyfriend—his butt planted in a nearby tavern—wouldn’t come to help her look. So Owens volunteered and, after a short track, found the huntress’ buck; a 17-point goliath that would field dress over 200 pounds. Owens helped her tag, gut and drag the buck, then load it on her truck. He refused the woman’s offer of money, and just accepted a heart-felt “thank you” before leaving.
When DNR warden Dave Swanson heard about Owens’ kindly act, he nominated the 18-year old for La Crosse Tribune/Wisconsin DNR’s annual Hunter Ethics Award. Owens won, and will accept the department’s official “thank you” this summer. This award, started in 1997, has always struck me as an exceedingly cool idea. Too often, the only time we hear about other deer hunters is when they perform on one of two extremes; either they kill a record-book buck, or they get nailed for some poaching offense.
Obviously, most deer hunters do not shoot world-class bucks, nor do they break any game laws. So it’s a great thing when a few individuals are recognized for the random acts of kindness they perform in the deer woods. So what about ethical hunters in your area? Do you hear enough about what they do? Are there awards for honoring acts like Owens’?

What a fine example of an ethical young hunter! Ive always believed that kids who are raised in the outdoors hunting, fishing, camping, etc, turn out to better people for it. This article gives me faith in the next generation of hunters because hunting/fishing ethics are more important now than ever before.
Great story. I would like to see Ohio come up with something like that.
I would like to think that most of us would do that! He deserves that award. I havent heard of a award like that before but is a awesome idea!
Good for that kid.
Random acts of kindness?
Gee., I would be a wealthy Man if I had a nickel for rendered aid to every lost hiker and motorist especially with a flat tire or stuck.
Besides, my riches lay elsewhere!
I rescued a Forest Ranger with a flat tire, stuck and lost one day in New Mexico iupper end of Hay Canyon then had the audacity to try to give me a citation on being on a muddy road. The Ranger backed tracked when I told her I was there to rescue her by order of New Mexico State Police! Yes She was new and learned very quickly that hunters are her best friend!!
Nick Owens, one word
Awesome!
Good for you young man good for you!! These are the stories we all want to hear about instead of the B&C animals shot by millionaires during seasons that no one else could possibly afford to partake in. Every state ought to have a ethical hunter of the year award. This guy not only helped out another hunter he probably saved a hunter who could have possibly quit hunting after such a experience. To the boyfried who was drunk and wouldn't answer her calls- you are a smuck!
I agree with every one else. He did the right thing, and that makes me proud to be associated with the outdoor community. TX doesn't have a program like this that I know of.
that was a great story.
Congrats to the young man for doing what we all should be doing everyday.
Your parents should be proud!
Jim
P.S. I hope the young lady dumped the boyfriend who would rather drink than either hunt with or help his girlfriend. What a jerk!
Thats great Nick. Lot of people might not have helped her out. Always good when hunters help other hunters out or anyone for that matter. Does anyone know if Nebraska has something like this. Walt your right bout her boyfriend. Could use a few diffrent words but wouldn't be good to have on the site.
Right on Mr. Owens. As to the young lady, I hope she doesn't give up on hunting, finds a mentor, and dumps the tavern-ensconced chum.
What a great story ... finally some good news!
Nick Owens, sounds like a great young man with great parents.
I hope that all Department of Wildlife officials take a good look at this article and begin to "honor acts" of kindness, suck as Mr.Owens.
That woman was someones daughter, sister or mother ... congratulations young man!
That is a great story and a great idea by the state.
Nate
That kid gets two thumbs way up in my book.
Hes a class act not very many people that yould do that.
The world would be a better place if there were more people like nick owens out there. He helped someone out of the kindness of his hart without expecting anything in return and refusing payment. Congrats and it is a well-earned award.

such a kind deed..i look up to him
half the hunters in maine would tag the deer for themselves! I personally believe that you feel better though helping someone else than you would tagging someone else's deer
Good story. What a great example of true sportsmanship. Mr. Owens sounds like a fine young man. I agree with the comments above that the young lady should find a new boyfriend. I'm guessing she has.
It is nice to see an article about a hunter that is not about a world record buck or poaching offenses. This is the type of hunter that is a great reflection of what hunters are all about. But pertaining to the article, I can not believe her boyfriend would not come help her. The size of the buck is awesome too. I hope he gets rewarded with such a buck next year!
This is I perfect example of what hunting is about. It is not only about the trophies or the limits, but about the camaraderie and memories.
" Right On!" about sums it up! Great job!
Have you read about the new B&C world record elk. That's at the other end of the spectrum and all about what money can buy. DLP4570
Sounds like someone needs a new boyfriend! The scumbag wouldn't even get off his butt to help the girl retrieve a giant deer that is probably bigger than any he has ever shot. Way to go Nick!!
Good for him, and well done!
I at least hope he got her number
I hope she gave him more than a thank you.
Like a hug. What did you think I meant?
must have been rised to respect women and the outdoors, unlike the girls boyfriend or (exboyfriend)!!
Congrats to Nick on an award well-deserved! I hope that girl dumped the loser boyfriend and continues to hunt; hopefully with Nick :) Young hunters keep hunting alive and seeing diversity in the woods is great. Kudos to all the huntresses out there!
Jim in MO,
You are a dirty old man. A man after my own heart....LOL
