March Madness: Remington Model 700 is the F&S All-Purpose Whitetail Rifle Champ

By Dave Hurteau

Well I don’t think any of us can pretend to be surprised. (If we did a shotgun tourney, the 870 would surely win, too.) But getting here was fun, and in the end it came down to mystique vs. legendary accuracy.

Here in the northeastern big woods, where pinpoint accuracy is not paramount, I tend to favor mystique, which is probably why my cabinet holds a Rifleman’s Rifle in 7mm-08 (not to mention a Savage 99 in .300 Savage and a Model 94 in .30/30, among others). But I must say that I’ve long lusted for a Model 700 Mountain Rifle in .260. The 700’s incredible popularity and proven out-of-the-box accuracy make it a deserving winner, you must admit (although you’re welcome to complain about it below).

Well done Mr Hurteau. I wonder what Mr. O'Connor's response would have been?

Not to be disrespectful of Cactus Jack or anyone else, but who cares what Jack thought about the M-70 or M-700 or anything else?

The results of the poll will not make me run out and sell my Weatherby, CZ's and Sako and buy a 700.

And this is where I disagree with many of you. We have a lot of high quality firearm manufacturers. Why do we need to import guns when we have such good guns makers in the good old US of A. Counties that make guns that their own citizens can't buy makes me feel like we are being played for suckers. I only own 1 non American made firearm and its days are numbered.

The Remington 700 may not be the best rifle out there but it is a proven blue collar workhorse of a gun. The vast popularity of this rifle has more to do with the shear volume of them made and affordable price than quality. I own several rifles better than my 700 but have owned the 700 the longest, making it my sentimental favorite.

The Rem 700s "legendary accuracy" is truly legendary. I've seen 700s that grouped well, and others that stinked, stanked, and stunk. Same goes for many Winchesters built from the mid-1970s through the early 2000s. Apparently they're much better now.

The whole reason for all the "MOA shooter and here's the proof" guarantees now offered by several firms was because of spotty quality in Remichesters' long arms.

With any luck, we have left the days of lemon 700s and lime 70s behind us.

Just take a look at the picture above - and it shoots even better than it looks.

Congratulations Remington 700.

I ordered one but the type I wanted in 6mm was out, I ended up with an A-bolt synthetic in 243 Win and never looked back. Did I miss out? Doubtful, run an a-bolt back and forth and see why. Cheers.

I own one 700 and I can't decide which trigger I am going to replace the factory trigger with . I'm thinking about a Timney.
WAM,
I never paid much attention to Jack because he sang the praises of the 270 and I was never a 270 fan. He talked like that was the only cartridge made.

I've got a 700 270 WSM and can't think of too much this rifle won't handle for anything in the North American woods.

Ive shot three centerfire rifles: a remington 770 .243(cousin's gun), a remington 700 .243( friend's gun), and a howa 1500 30-06(the gun i'm planning to buy). The howa was the most solid and reliable, and had the most manageable recoil. There are other guns out there guys.

@ Sarge01

I won a Tikka T3 camo stainless .270 WSM at a RMEF banquet. I think I am going to sell it. The camo stainless model is only available through RMEF. It can't possible shoot better than the two M-700's I own!

WAM,
I had a Tikka T3 Lite in 270WSM that with handloads shot 1/2 inch groups. I traded it for something else because like I said I'm not a 270 fan. It was one of those things that I just thought I just had to have.

Own enough of these, "need a safty that works SevenHundreds" and yes I have problems with them. Going to replace with $1500.00 worth of Timneys and go from there as I like the weapon just don't need the surprise...AGAIN ! SARGE, Timney sells them set to the weight pull you want (with in reason)@ $130.00. I wouldn't buy another(7oo) but they are very good shooting platforms. I have a lefty 700 in 06 that has been calling from the safe...I'll be good ? Still think the Vangard may be a better buy than these finalists ?

I own many rifles however, my Rem 700 DMB in 260 Rem made one year is one that I would not want to part with. A tack driver with a consistent 3 lb trigger and kills deer dead. Great rifle, Greater Caliber !!!!

The Rem. 700 is just an all around good rifle, you can find them anywhere, just about everybody has shot one at one time, and most importantly they are reliable and accurate.

Yep it is my favorite rifle and the one I voted for. It is interesting that ruger has gone push feed in the new american rifle. I think its more accurate then a controlled feed. I own 2 700 remingtons. Its a rifle mans rifle. Nothing wrong with the model 70 however.

With all the well documented safety problems on the 700, I wouldn't use one if someone gave it to me! Apparently a rifle firing when it's not supposed to is not an issue with F&S.

Very good rifle, have one in 7mm rem mag and it can hit anything within 500 yards easily(scope is limiting that number). very smooth action but trigger pull could be a bit shorter and lighter for me.

I love mine. It wouldn't group that well, so I had a Shilen barrel put on, reworked the trigger, and it is now a 270 tack-driver. It just feels good when I shoot it.

Bought a 700 LSS in .260 with the laminated stcck. Much less recoil than my 30/06 with same weight bullets (140 gr vs 150 gr); up to 200 yards seems be just as effective based on hunting wild hogs.

And, it's light, same weight as the Win 30/30. And the stcck doesn't warp. And the action doesn't require a lot of care. And it's accurate.

And, it's made in the USA!
