Here's how it works. This contest will have three rounds. The first, Round I, began, March 12, and closed on April 12. Round II ran from April 12 to May 12, and Round III from May 14 to June 14. Turtle Hunting Banned in Alabama

Any Alabama turtle hunters out there? If so, then you are no more, and you can thank the apparently insatiable Asian turtle meat market for that...

Hunting wild freshwater turtles is now illegal in Alabama. The new regulations, which went into effect on Sunday, are some of the strictest in the nation - a fact herpetologist and "turtle expert" Dr. David Nelson welcomes. "We want to protect what we have," said Dr. Nelson, a professor at the University of South Alabama. "Because you can't go many places in this world and find nicer habitats or more diverse fauna, and so we've got something really valuable, and we need to keep and protect it." It turns out Asia has a big appetite for turtle meat, for food and medicinal purposes. According to experts, Asia depleted their own supply, and turned to the U.S to feed their hunger.

"They've over-fished in asia, so theres not a whole lot around," said Bill Trufant, who sells turtles (among other animals) at the B & B Pet Stop in Mobile. "So they come to the states and get our turtles." As surrounding states passed regulations banning turtle harvesting, Alabama's lack of policing made it a prime target. "Alabama is not too progressive when it comes to protecting the environment," said Dr. Nelson. "The Department of Conservation has always done what they can within the limits of the law, but of course they can only enforce the law." The new law applies to both public and private lands, but does not include turtle farmers, who do not get their turtles from the wild. Poachers caught selling turtles in Alabama can face a $500 fine and a year in jail. But some experts believe many will take the risk.

Does that mean kids can't catch turtles anymore, either? Turtle-catchin' was an integral and important part of my formative years. Of course, when I was eight, I also didn't plan on exporting all those box turtles, red-eared sliders, soft-shelled turtles and common snappers for the Asian market, so maybe Alabama game wardens will go easy on innocent youthful offenders. Makes me wonder, though: Can't we make some kind of deal here? Something like, they leave our turtles alone, and in return we'll give all their carp and snakeheads back? Sounds fair to me...

UK Boy Finds Live WWII-Era Grenade on Easter Egg Hunt

When I was a child, I had a really terrifying shopping mall Easter bunny experience. I'd rather not talk about it, but the haunting memory of those few horrifying moments perched atop that giant rodent's lap spurred two things within me: A subsequent intense and cathartic desire to take up rabbit hunting, and the firm belief that the Easter bunny is pure evil. And now I have my proof...

A 3-year-old British boy on an Easter egg hunt Saturday morning discovered a live hand grenade. The device was on the side of a busy road next to the field where families were conducting their Easter ritual in Holford, Somerset. According to reports in the British press, the boy was actually standing on the device when an adult spotted him. “We were beginning to count up the eggs at the end of the hunt and I saw a boy of three standing on an object. ‘It was brown and about four inches high. It looked like an Easter egg, but it was a hand grenade,” Stuart Moffatt told the Daily Mail. ” I was shocked. The boy who was standing on it thought it was a rock.”

Moffatt is an engineering consultant who was attending the event with his wife and their three young children. About 25 children were reportedly in that field on the Easter egg hunt. This is Somerset reported that the device was destroyed in a controlled explosion. The Mail says the grenade is believed to have been a relic from World War II.

"A relic from WWII." Yeah, right. I know the truth. Anyone else with me on this, or am I "crazy" and have "bunny issues" like my therapist claims?

Special NJ Nighttime Coyote Hunt Starts Next Monday

Hot on the heels of New jersey's contentious, litigious and largely successful bear season comes the Garden State's first special nighttime coyote hunt.

First it was the black bears, now it’s coyotes. Beginning next Monday, New Jersey will permit hunters to shoot the wolves on the spot for a special hunting season. The New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife estimates more than five thousand coyotes are running wild around in the Garden State. Biologist Andrew Burnett says they usually prey on rodents and rabbits, but can easily attack small pets, alarming many residents and pet owners.

“There have been incidences of coyotes trying to take small dogs while their owners are walking them on a leash. Cats are usually always at risk. It’s not that the coyote will actively go out and seek these animals. However, should they encounter one they wouldn’t necessarily turn it down”, warns Burnett in an interview with Newark-based radio station website, WBGO.org.

Wildlife experts say it may be difficult to hunt coyotes because they are generally wary of humans and run away quickly when spotted. Hunters in the Garden State have been allowed to use rifles to shoot coyotes during daylight since November. Now, the special permit will allow hunters to shoot the animals at night. Coyote hunting season will continue until mid March.

British Hunters Claim Animal-Rights Activists Ran Over Foxhound

Here's one from the "So Much For Compassion For All Life" files... British fox hunters are claiming that animal-rights activists deliberately lured a foxhound on to a busy road and then ran it over.

Hunt members have accused saboteurs of deliberately running over a hound after using horns to lure it onto the road. The hound was out with the Cotswold Vale Hunt near Gloucester on Tuesday morning when it was hit by a Rover car on the A38 Tewkesbury road at Norton. Members of the hunt claim saboteurs used horns to attract the hound on to the road before it was killed.

A statement released by the Countryside Alliance on behalf of hunt members said: "The hunt was harassed by hunt saboteurs during a children's meet. "The huntsman did all he could to avert this incident, but was unable to do so. "We are in a climate where animal rights activists are harassing hunts to an unacceptable level and the incident was both dangerous and irresponsible. Hunt members have accused saboteurs of deliberately running over a hound after using horns to lure it onto the road. "Hunt saboteurs proclaim to love animals, but it is about hating the people who hunt and nothing more."

The "hunt saboteurs," of course, deny the charges...

But Lee Moon, a spokesman from the Hunt Saboteurs Association, said the protesters did not have horns when the hound was run over. He said: "Five saboteurs were at the hunt, including four women, and my understanding is they had been monitoring the hunt. "They had not seen it for 45 minutes and did not do anything to drive it into the A38 - no one blew hunting horns or instigated this tragic incident." He claims the hunt was split, with some of the 40 hunters on each side of the A38. He believed the hunt was attempting to cross the road when the hound was killed, he said.
