Hawaii - Kona
Beaches are peripheral to Big Island adventures this month when horse-size blue marlin migrate into this summer pasture. Serious anglers book a year in advance for the tournaments. Kona's quick access to deep water gets tourists trolling for big game in 15 minutes. Granders have been caught right out of the harbors. Newer skippers are more willing to detour for smaller fish, but they keep the catch. Negotiate up front for a tuna to grill. The Charter Desk, 888-566-2484; charterdesk.com
Guide's Tips
Species: Blue Marlin
Guide: Boyd Decoito, The Charter Desk, charterdesk.com; 808-329-5735
Rig Specifics: Heavy-duty Milton rod and Shimano reel, 130-pound-test line, 6-foot double line, 26-foot leader (400- to 650-pound test), 9/0 to 14/0 hook, using skipjack tuna for bait.
Quick Tip: Make sure you have a good, sharp hook. Also, if a marlin hits, slack your drag a little bit as the fish make its initial run.
Where to Fish: Just north of Kailua-Kona Harbor.
