Las Vegas-area anglers aren't referring to temperature when they say that things are boiling this month. What they really mean is that big striped bass are being taken on threadfin shad spawning on Boulder Basin's north shore. Gulls swooping to the water help anglers locate stripers gorging on shad schools that they've pinned against the surface. Rig a Zara Spook or any shadlike topwater lure and expect to hook bass averaging 2 pounds. American Angler Fishing Guide Service, 702-630-2237; americanangler.net Guide's Tips Species: Striped Bass Guide: Bob Wood, American Angler Guide Service, americanangler.net; 702-630-2237 Rig Specifics: 7-foot medium baitcasting rod with 10- or 12-pound line, using Lucky Craft Gunfish or Zara Spooks. Quick Tip: Look for surface boils that indicate where shad are. They'll look like a pot of water boiling on the stove. Once you've found one, simply cast your line into it. Stripers follow shad. Where to Fish: Lower Basin, at the Las Vegas end of the lake. Photos From Lake Mead
