Utah - Green River
When other rivers rage with runoff, the Green, tamed by Flaming Gorge Dam, provides a tailrace fishery that attracts flyfishers from surrounding states. Join the crowd in the 7 miles below the dam, where rainbows dominate, or get a bit of privacy by fishing downstream in the 9-mile Devil's Hole section, which has mostly browns. Cast beetles, hoppers, and other terrestrials with beadhead droppers. If the cicada hatch returns this year, huge trout will lose their shyness for rising to the top. Green River Outfitters, 435-885-3355; fishgreenriver.com Guide's Tips Species: Rainbow and Brown Trout Guide: Denny Breer, Green River Outfitters, fishgreenriver.com; 435-885-3355 Rig Specifics: 9-foot, 5-weight fly rod, floating line, 9-foot leader, 5X tippet, 1 BB split shot (or more, if needed), 2-fly rig with pale morning duns, little yellow sallies, caddis, golden stones, or cicadas, if available. Quick Tip: If the drift is not drag free, then you won't have a chance. You can get away with larger tippet here, but the drift is what catches fish. Where to Fish: About three miles below the Flaming Gorge Dam, near the community of Dutch John in unincorporated Daggett County. Photos From Green River
