Washington - Columbia River Estuaries
Sturgeon are the attraction in the Columbia River's lower 20 miles, where the catch is measured in feet, not inches. Five-footers are common, and some anglers plunk anchovies to hook behemoths in the 10-foot range. The estuaries provide the most thrills, as sturgeon hooked in the shallows break the surface. Charters run $80 a day. Private boaters often follow the charters to tide-changing hotspots just above and below the Astoria Bridge. Long Beach Visitors Bureau, 800-451-2542; funbeach.com Guide's Tips Species: Sturgeon Guide: Lance Fisher, columbia-river-fishing-guides.net; 503- 936-4774 Rig Specifics: 9-foot, medium-heavy fiberglass rod, such as the Lamiglas XCF904, with 65-pound braided mono, an 80-pound-test leader, and a Mustad barbless hook, using sand shrimp and anchovies for bait. Quick Tip: June is the best month for sturgeon fishing, anywhere. The action is best in shallow water, on an incoming tide. Where to Fish: The 12-mile stretch near Bonneville Dam.
