Peak isn't normally a desert term, except at this 6,800-acre splash among sand dunes where biologists have documented peak walleye populations. The season's absolute best walleye feeding activity is late May and early June. Start north of Interstate 90 near Heron Island, where the action can rival highway speeds on jigs and plugs with water temperatures in the 60s. Limits are liberal, and the fish range into the teens. Cascade Marina, 509-765-6718; cascademarina.com Guide's Tips Species: Walleye Guide: David Chambers, Cascade Marina, cascademarina.com; 509-765-6718 Rig Specifics: 7-foot light-medium baitcasting rod, Quantum 860 PT reel, monofilament line, self-made worm harnesses with spinnerbait, 1 hook. Quick Tip: Start shallow first thing in the morning and move out to deeper water as the day goes on. Use a depthfinder to find dropoffs and structure. Where to Fish: A dropoff near the Interstate 82 bridge.
