Arizona - Roosevelt Lake
Summertime night owls have a hoot after sundown hooking largemouths by the dozens on this sprawling reservoir (22,000 acres at full pool). Start from Windy Hill at the Salt River end. Rig a boat-side lamp to see the bank as you cast curly-tailed jigs. Retrieve along shelves where bass have quick access to deep water. The first time you go, hire a guide who can help you learn the rocky areas. Roosevelt Lake Visitor Center, 928-467-3200. Bass N' Crappie Guide Service, 928-425-3037
Guide's Tips
Species: Largemouth Bass
Guide: LeRoy Price, cybertrails.com/~mlprice; 928-425-3037
Rig Specifics: Medium-sized baitcasting rod with 14-pound-test line and 1/4- or 3/8-ounce bullet weight, 4/0 Gamakatsu wide-gap hook, using worms or double-tail jigs.
Quick Tip: Start fishing the points. Try to find a long point that's got dropoffs on each side, preferably with some brush or rock.
Where to Fish: The Salt Flats, as locals call the area, on the northeast side of the lake.
