Arizona - Chevelon Canyon Reservoir
For high-country trout fishing, carry a boat down to Chevelon right now. Even at 6,400 feet, trout will soon get sluggish. Only hardy anglers relish driving 30 miles into the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest to haul packable vessels down a steep trail. It's worth it, though, because the temperatures are cooler and you get to explore 6 miles of the state's best brown trout fishing. If water's still spilling, try the pools below the dam. Otherwise, fish lake points with lures or streamers. Make notes to return in autumn, when browns up to 30 inches move into the south-end creeks for spawning. Guide's Tips
Species: Rainbow Trout
Guide: Ben Koller, The Hookup Outfitters, TheHookUpOutfitters.com; 623-412-3474
Rig Specifics: 9-foot, 5-weight fly rod, sinking line, beadhead woolly bugger (size 10, black).
Quick Tip: Especially in the summer, if the fish aren't right at the top, then they're usually suspended off the first break, point, or wall. Therefore, look for deep-water access coming into the shallows.
Where to Fish: Around the Chevelon Canyon Dam.
