For high-country trout fishing, carry a boat down to Chevelon right now. Even at 6,400 feet, trout will soon get sluggish. Only hardy anglers relish driving 30 miles into the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest to haul packable vessels down a steep trail. It's worth it, though, because the temperatures are cooler and you get to explore 6 miles of the state's best brown trout fishing. If water's still spilling, try the pools below the dam. Otherwise, fish lake points with lures or streamers. Make notes to return in autumn, when browns up to 30 inches move into the south-end creeks for spawning.
