There's precious little time for partying on party boats drifting over the schools of barracuda that flood into these waters this month. Drop a 2-ounce Ironman jig into 'cudas feeding on anchovies or sardines, reel up fast as you can, and whomp! The fish are not dainty. Be versatile when you book a boat. If yellowtails have arrived at San Clemente Island, go for them. Davey's Locker Sportfishing, 949-673-1434; daveyslocker.com Guide's Tips Species: Sand Bass Guide: Norris Tapp, Davey's Locker Sportfishing, daveyslocker.com; 949-673-1434 Rig Specifics: 6- or 7-foot medium saltwater rod and reel, 15- to 20-pound-test line, dropper loop configuration with 2- to 4-ounce sinker, using live anchovies or small sardines for bait. Quick Tip: After casting your bait out and letting it sink, wait 10 to 12 seconds. At that point, if you haven't gotten a hit, move your rod tip so the bait will move just a little bit and wait until you feel a tug. Then set your hook. Where to Fish: From Main Beach in Laguna Beach all the way up to the Huntington Beach Pier, anywhere from two to four miles offshore. For bass in particular, the area known to locals as the Huntington Flats is especially good. Photos From Newport Beach
