California - Sacramento River
Fast-food restaurants are no more convenient than the Sacramento River, which serves up football-shaped rainbows within minutes of downtown Redding. Drift boats rule at this time of year. River flows are increased to support downstream irrigation, making it easy to float the 15.5-mile stretch from Posse Grounds to Anderson River Park. Locals have experimented with a zillion patterns, but nothing is more reliable day to day than a Fox's Poopah fished deep with a couple of split shot under a strike indicator. The Fly Shop, 800-669-3474; flyshop.com Guide's Tips Species: Trout Guide: Justin Miller, The Fly Shop, theflyshop.com; 800-669-3474 Rig Specifics: 9-foot, 6-weight fly rod, floating line, double nymph rig with indicator. Quick Tip: A dead drift is critical, and it must be a drag-free drift to be successful. Set the hook on even the smallest movement, because some rainbows can be very subtle eaters. Where to Fish: From Keswick Dam down to the town of Anderson. Photo From Sacramento River
