Tactics for Winter

Q:So Im new at the whole ice fishing thing, during the summer me and my friend pike fish all the time now that we got our lisences. But last year we trid ice fishing for pike and had absolutly no luck. I think we might have been too deep in the water, or using the wrong bait but i'm not sure. Do we use minnows, sucker minnows, hard baits, worms or what? And how deep should i go. Also I'm not sure because i don't have a depth or fish finder. Just a pole, some tip-ups and a auger. So if you would help me out a little i'd appreciate it. Thanks.

Q:i know that the time for ice fishing is a little ways off but i am new to the sport and was wondering how to get started. i have no ice fishing gear whatsoever except the winter clothing. i was wondering if anyone had a good starter outfit that i could buy and that is not too expensive. i will be going up to New Hampshire this winter and staying on a cabin on Lake Winnisquam. i was also wondering if anyone had any advice on how to fish winnisquam through the ice.

Q:Does anybody use bait piles under their ice huts? I am fishing in Lake Superior for whitefish and have been using rice. However I am uncertain how much and when to use it or if some other bait is more effective. I fish in 30 to 40 feet of water and am wondering if there is an efficient way to get the bait to the bottom without scattering all over the lake?

The first three minutes of this video is a guy battling something through the ice. Skip that if you don't have time to the last 30 seconds where a guy reaches his hand in hole and pulls out a decent sized muskie by its gills through the ice. Ice fisherman are nuts.
