Chinese Fisherman Sells Highly Endangered Species for $473K

    9

    By Chad Love

In the struggle between being critically endangered and hugely profitable, guess which one wins? Uh, I'll take hugely profitable for a thousand, Trebek...

    From this story on businessinsider.com:
A Chinese fisherman has netted a fortune after catching a critically endangered, but hugely prized, fish worth £300,000 (That's about $473,000 to us Yanks...). The fisherman, whose identity has not been revealed, caught a Chinese Bahaba, or Giant Yellow Croaker, off the coast of Fujian province last week. After a bidding war, a local fishmonger paid him three million yuan (£300,000) for the 176lb fish, or £1,700 a pound, according to the Strait News, a local newspaper in Fujian.

The fisherman told the newspaper he had found the fish floating on the surface of the sea and had "picked it up." The size of the fish caught the attention of his fellow villagers, and the specimen was quickly identified. After the auction, the fisherman said he would use the windfall to buy a bigger boat.

Make Your Flies "Pop" with Spectrum U/V Spray

    9

    By Kirk Deeter

I've been paying a lot of attention lately to colors on flies and using fluorescent "hot spots"; focusing more on how fish see flies underwater than how they look in my hands above the surface. We know, for example that certain colors dissipate in deeper water due to the decrease in light penetration. The deeper you go, the grayer it gets.

Conservation Update: Numbers of Hunters, Anglers in US on the Rise

    5

    By Bob Marshall

A press release from the Department of Interior last week held some of the best news in recent years for sportsmen—and the quality of life of all Americans: After decades of steady declines, the number of hunters and anglers in the U.S. showed significant increases over the last five years.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s 2011 National Survey of Fishing, Hunting, and Wildlife-Associated Recreation showed the number hunters and anglers increased 9 and 11 percent respectively, part of the 38 percent of all Americans who participated in wildlife-related recreation. That was an increase of 2.6 million participants from the previous survey in 2006. A Service spokesperson said the survey, which has been done every five years since 1955, last showed an increase was in the late the 1980s — which means we've halted a 30-year slide. Reporting From the International Fly Tackle Dealer Show: What Do You Want to Know?

    By Kirk Deeter

I'm en route to Reno, for the International Fly Tackle Dealer trade show which kicks off tomorrow and runs through Saturday. This is the place where the fly fishing industry--manufacturers and dealers--get together to discuss the latest trends, pressing issues, and, of course, show off the new products that will be launched in 2013.

The interesting thing is that many companies have already spilled the beans on their new products. Orvis is launching a "Helios 2" fly rod that is really, really good. (I know, because I've been fishing a prototype for the past month; an in-depth review is coming soon). Far Bank (Sage) is launching some new rods (actually the company already launched them at the European trade show in June) named Circa (a slow action), Response and Approach. But the real news concerning Sage might be that they're introducing the ONE Elite, which is tricked out with fine titanium guides and a reel seat for a record-breaking retail price of $1,295. (That's not a typo).

Pulling in a Giant Tuna You Speared While Sharks Circle Below

    3

    By Joe Cermele

Spearfishing is definitely not my game, but I can't help appreciating the recent catch of Hawaiian angler Wendell Ko for multiple reasons. According to this story on the blog of photographer Jon Schwartz, Ko doesn't want to dive the reef where fish abound. That's too easy. Ko wants to stalk his fish. To best the 188-pound yellowfin tuna in the video, he dove down 60 feet on a single gulp of air. That's impressive. What's more impressive is that once he reached depth he waited. He patiently hovered for "minutes" hoping a tuna would cruise by. It did, and he hit his mark. Then he had to get it to the surface while oceanic white tip sharks swarmed. Not for me, but good for you, bro!

Fly Fishing with SUPs is Not a Fad

    By Tim Romano

A SUP, for those yet uninitiated, is a Stand Up Paddle board.

I can see Mr. Joe Cermele rolling his eyes now...

It's been almost a year to the day that I last posted on this subject and started fishing off my very own board. That post had quite a bit of spirited conversation and comments. Granted it did have a healthy dose of ladies in bikinis fishing off said boards...

Since then I've heard that SUP fishing is a fad and a "silly way to fish." Ahem, Mr. Cermele. I'm here to tell you it's not a fad and it's not going away.

The Best Fly Fishing Movie Ever

    By Tim Romano

Surely I must be talking about "A River Runs Through It," right? Wrong.

While I have a huge place in my heart for "the" movie -- it's one of my favorites -- the new documentary Low and Clear is without a doubt one of the best movies I have seen in regards to fly fishing, period. It ranks right up there with the best documentaries and is simply one of the most elegant movies on fishing.

Filmmakers Tyler Hughen, Kahlil Hudson, and Alex Jabonski have finally released the full length version which is available on Kickstarter.com. [ Read Full Post ]

On the Road: Signs, Signs, Everywhere a Sign

    By Phil Bourjaily

I was in North Carolina on vacation last week. Halfway between Southport and Supply I saw the famous “Worms and Coffee” sign. While I didn’t really need gas, I couldn’t resist stopping in for $20 worth just so I could snap a picture with my smartphone.

The “Worms and Coffee” sign has been there since 1997, and has become a local landmark and attraction. Photos of the sign have appeared on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" and the "Late Show With David Letterman." And really, early in the morning if you’re on your way to go fishing, what more do you need than worms and coffee?

Oyster Fossil Containing Potential World's Biggest Pearl to Remain Closed

    6

    --Chad Love

A British commercial fishing trawler recently dredged up an ancient and giant fossilized oyster that just might contain the largest pearl the world has ever seen. But the world may never see it because opening the oyster would destroy the extremely rare fossil. What to do?

From this story in the UK Daily Mail:

A 145million-year-old oyster fossil trawled up off the south coast by fishermen could contain the mother of all pearls. Experts used medical MRI scanning technology to analyse the fossil to discover if there was a rare gem inside. And their results showed up a mysterious smooth object about the size of a golf ball. If it were removed and identified as a pearl, it could be worth many thousands of pounds. But experts will not explore the contents any further because it would mean the fossil would have to be destroyed. The oyster – which measures about 7in across – remains at the Blue Reef Aquarium in Portsmouth, where it is kept securely and brought out only for lectures. [ Read Full Post ]

Whistles Are The Best Safety Gear for Anglers

    By Kirk Deeter

I was fishing in Slough Creek in Yellowstone National Park yesterday, aka bear country. My group saw two black bears while on foot, and two grizzlies from the car (thankfully). We didn't have any problems because the bears knew we were around, and that's usually the key. Letting them know you're in their neighborhood will help you prevent most potential problems with bears. Video: Massive Mako Shark On the Fly

    7

    by Tim Romano

    Warning: Video contains graphic language.

Our friend Conway Bowman and his right hand man Captain Dave Trimble put on the Flying Mako catch and release fly fishing tournament every year in San Diego. The purpose of the tournament "is to promote sustainability, conservation and sound management of mako sharks and other apex predators.

The proceeds from the tourney are donated to the Pfleger Institute of Environmental Research. This year entrant Mark Martin used his boat to guide friend and fellow angler Alex Beck to what looks to be a mako shark estimated to be between 500 and 800 pounds.

Fessing Up About Product Review Whiffs

    By Kirk Deeter

As many of you know, we are now knee-deep in the trade show season; when new products for 2013 are being unveiled at breakneck speeds and the hype machine is running full throttle. I admit to having been made a sucker by that hype machine in the past. The benefit of hindsight and many months of actually fishing with some of these products has helped me realize that, in some cases, I probably drank a little too much PR Kool-Aid. So in the interest of clearing my own conscience (before I start gulping the next batch), I want to come clean on some cases where I whiffed. Video: Collection of Vintage Fishing Polaroids

    5

    By Tim Romano

A few years ago, while photo editing the The Flyfish Journal, a photographer named Sean Kerrick sent me a group of images he had taken of a lost collection of Polaroids he found at a gas station in southern Wyoming. Sean said the photographs were found while "fishing and exploring the Green River — high winds forced our crew off the water and back to the car. While exploring the backroads, we arrived at a tiny gas station that didn't even sell gas any more, just basic country style stuff: beer, cigs, gatorade, water and some random fishing and hunting tackle."
