in NA i would go with a 375 or 416 rifle. in Africa 505 Gibbs or a classic double in a Nitro caliber.

Just curious, but how bad is the recoil from a rifle like the 505 Gibbs or one of the Nitro calibers? I've been shooting for years, but nothing more then standard calibers. I saw a 416 Rigby catridge the other day and that big stuff must be brutal.

470 Nitro for anything in Africa it has over 5000#s of energy with a 500grain bullet, in North America I would take a 375H&H loaded with a good 300 grain bullet like a Partion or Trophy Bonded it should push about 4000#s at the muzzle.

For a charging bear?

A face full of 1 1/2 oz of #6's in the face of a charging Grizz, I've been told by Alaskan Biologists works pretty darn good believe it or not!

Stopping What? The only things I have ever had to stop were a charging wild hog, (.375 Winchester, 15 feet) and an escaping doe that had lain dead for 20 minutes. (.30-'06 Springfield, 250 yds.) For a grizzly, I would only hope my .375 H&H would be sufficient. For African game, I defer to Happy Myles.

In North America, the .375 H&H should stop anything that needs stopping.
