The Firing Line
I sold my S&W Model 637 Lightweight .38 Special today and replaced it with a S&W M&P .40 cal. Shield. The weight is almost equal, the Shield is somewhat slimmer, and the
Shield gives me two more rounds of ammo. I carried a .40 cal. on duty for 7 years before we changed over to ,45's. The .40 got a bad rap when it first came out because there wasn't any good ammo loaded for it. The best .40 cal. load I have found is the 155 grain Winchester Silvertip. I also have some 165 grain hydro shocks which is supposed to be a reliable round. The local City PD Dept. carries the Hydro Shocks.
Sarge - How do you like your Shield? I am looking for something with a bit more umph than my LCP and that is more discreet than the S&W Mdl 19 I have taken to Lugging around ( Have graduated to a desk job)
I look forward to your assessment after you've given the Shield a good work-out.
EJP- I should have it sometime next week and will give it a trial run soon after. Can't give a good report until at least 100 rounds fired.
nchunt2101- I graduated to a semi desk job in the early 90's and then retired in 2006 so now it is hunting, golf and Little League with the grandkids. I will report on the Shield when I give it a test run.
I picked up my M&P Shield this week. I like the looks and feel of it. I will be at the range next week to give it a test run. It is the size and weight that I expected and is going to be easy to conceal.
I like a mix of FMJ and HPs in a hi-cap autoloader. Hydra-Shoks and similar are poor barrier penetrators.
I normally carry Winchester 155 grain Silver Tips. I just had some Hydro Shocks in my desk drawer that I put in for now. My regular carry will be the Winchester Silver Tips. I carried a .40 caliber on duty for 9 years between the .357 and the .45. We found the best round was the Winchester 155 grain Silver Tip. Penetration and mushrooming combined plus they seemed to be "hotter" than any other factory load. With only 7 rounds you don't have the liberty of having too many choices in the magazine.
My youngest carries a H&K .40 issue. They've had no performance issues that I'm aware of. Unfortunately, they have "practical tests" two or three times a year! So far, the .40 has proven VERY effective!
I'm also considering the S&W M&P in .40 cal as a concealed carry. My Rock Island .45 is a very handsome, well designed and performs admirably, but that chunk of "pig iron" pulls my pants down and is "TOUGH" to conceal! LOL!!
Side note:
Those of you that have a CHL or are considering a concealed carry license, you need to read a couple of books. Both by Chris Bird.
"Thank God I Had A Gun" and "Concealed Weapon Handbook"
I'm not certain of the second title, but it's the only two books Bird has written. Both very good reads with lot's of good info!
I tested the .40 cal Shield at the range the other day and it is a dream to shoot. The grip is comfortable on the hand for the .40 cal. round. The thing that really amazed me was the trigger. I was expecting the normal trigger for a pistol of that size and make up and it fired before I was on center mass. The trigger is light and super smooth especially for a small pistol of that caliber. The trigger was much better than the Model 27 Glock that I had before and the grip was more comfortable also. I am well pleased with my purchase. I am going to put Lazer sights on it soon.
