Good scope for elk hunting?

Uploaded on July 29, 2009

I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on a good scope for elk hunting. (3x9 etc not brands). I would like to hunt in Col. Wy. areas when I go.

I've found the 4.5-14X to be the best compromise for hunting out west, you can set the power low enough that if you get a real close shot you don't just see fur and it has enough magnification to make those longer pokes. I'd get it in a 50mm objective but 40mm is just fine(and cheaper). One thing about scopes with magnification such as these though, it is best to get one with a focus or adjustable objective, because zooming in will put the target out of focus at several ranges, at least from my experience.

THANKS BIGB. I LIKE THE ADJUSTABLE FOCUS. THE 3X9 I HAVE NOW IS ADJUSTABLE AND IT MAKES A DIFFERENCE WITH THE OLDER I GET.

A 3-9x40 is plenty of scope for shooting at practical ranges, which is somewhere this side of 350 yards for all but the most experienced and talented shooters.

I would go with a Leopold VX-II 4-12 X 50mm. That should cover any distances youare likely to shoot elk at. (4x for a 20yd shot and 12x for a 220 yard shot.) Should do great. Good luck!

I think it will work just fine for what you want it to do. Just out of curiosity, what bullet do you plan to use?

I use a 130 gr for deer here in Tn. I plan on maybe a 150 gr for anything larger.

270WSM

A friend's son hunts everything with a .270 WSM A-Bolt. I have helped him drag deer and elk back to camp every year with only one bullet hole in it. I think his Kahles scope is a 3-9x or 4-12x or somewhere in that range. I think a sturdy bullet in the 140 - 150 grain range will be fine. It has sure worked for him. I think the rifles used in our group are: 7mm Rem Mag (2), 7mm Weatherby (2) .30-06 (3) and .35 Whelen (2), 270 WSM (1), .270 Win (1). Not an Uber Mag in the bunch.

This is just my opinion. I have a Fixed power 4x 33 on my Tikka T3 270 win. I could comfortably make a 250 yard shot with it. I had a Bushnell 3-9x40 Trophy on my old rifle and it would stay sighted in. This new 4x has not budged since I sighted it in.
