How bad is this gonna kick?

Uploaded on September 02, 2009

Mossberg 835 12ga shooting remington corlokt 385gr slugs.
If someone could compare it to a rifle I would appreciate it. I have no problem shooting 30.06s or .270s or even .270wsm.

The 3" 1 7/8 oz turkey shot I used back in turkey season is about all the kick I could handle. I tried the 3.5" 2 oz shells and those were just much. Couldn't imagine much more than the 3" inch turkey loads with a scope 3.5 inches from my eye.

It shouldn't kick any more than those right?

Thanks to all who help.

My 870 12ga. is the hardest kicking gun I own, a lot harder than my .270 win or .50 cal muzzleloader, but I still wouldn't compare it to a mule. Just shoot it every so often to get used to the recoil. If you shoot it enough you won't even notice the recoil. Just keep the gun tight in the shoulder and focus on your target and not the recoil and you will be just fine.

I have the 835 and shot the 3 1/2 turkey loads out of it once and said that is just too much and the 3 1/2 steel T or bb for geese isn't bad no problems there. I have also shot the slugs out of the 870 and they were 2 3/4 and they would compare to the 3' turkey loads in my opinion. My advice is just load one put in tight in the shoulder and give it try. Remeber if you're going to be thinking about recoil your gonna miss the shot.

Does the term "rented mule" sound familiar? LOL

Great! A rented mule huh? Well I guess that answers the question of whether or not to invest in a good recoil pad. Thanks.

It shouldn't be too bad, that slug load in your gun should have somewhere around 23 foot pounds of recoil. Your 1 7/8 ounce turkey load produces approximately 50 foot pounds of recoil. These figures are appoximations, but they should be fairly close to the acutal numbers.

I think " knock your pecker into your watchpocket" about sums up a 3 1/2 turkey load in a pump gun.....The slug won't be as bad as that.
I would still move that scope as far forward as you could stand to. Take care of that eyebrow. Good luck with your slug shooting.

Oh I know. I was thinking about that bushnell banner 1.5 X 4 power shotgun scope for it. Has 4.3" of eye relief. Its also very affordable. Thanks for the ft lbs info streack, puts it into perspective.

I have a Nikon Slughunter 3-9 with the BDC reticle on my Encore 12 ga barrel that I turkey hunt with. It has 5" of eye relief. I have been thoroughly impressed with it and can highly recommend it.

Ok thanks. I shoot Nikon on every gun I own but was just trying to go with something a little cheaper on the slug gun. I mainly bow hunt and muzzle loader hunt. Probably only carry the shotty 4 times this year. You're right on with Nikon though. For the money I don't think there is anything better.

12 gauge slugs are a devil to shoot. They seem to kick a little bit harder than a 30/06

I think that is mostly because my pump shotgun is so light (no scope).

The turkey load is a bad dude, no comparison to the slug. I own an 835 and shoot drylok 3 1/2 all duck season, and i only weigh 150 pounds. I've seen a college football lineman shoot my gun with the 3 1/2 turkey loads and have to get his nose reset. I would compare it to your average rifle.
