The Firing Line
What do you guys think I should do? I shoot left-handed now, but I only shoot a couple times a year duck hunting and deer hunting (usually one or two weekends each, and that's about it). I plan on getting more into the sport (getting my carry permit, purchasing more firearms), and I want to know if I should continue shooting with my dominant hand/non-dominant eye, or switch and learn to shoot right-handed with my dominant eye. Thanks for your help and advice!
My Grandson bats right handed, shoots a basketball righthanded, plays golf right handed (right well I might add) but his left eye is dominant so he shoots his rifles left handed. I gave him a Tikka T3 Lite in .308 that is right handed and he handles it pretty well shooting left handed. Using your dominant eye when shooting is very important.
i shoot a long gun left hand, a hand gun right hand. not good with hand gun but shoot in offhand matches with flintlock and do better than most. shoot a bow righthand and do very well. i right left handed and throw right. when shooting laft hand i must close right because i am right eye dominant. i shot expert with m16 in army basic and most of my peers consider me a good shot. been doing it this way for almost 50yrs. trap shooting is my biggest challenge.try shooting trap with one eye closed.
My left eye is very dominant but I am right handed. I've shot left handed my whole life; mostly using right handed rifles and shotguns. I shoot pistols right handed aiming with my left eye. I've shot pistols competitively and did OK. I'd recommned that you try that because with such little shooting practice, it may be difficult for you to pick up a good sight picture with your right eye. Oh... I also have the problem that I can't wink with my left eye so I can't force a sight picture with my right eye. If you are that way too... it is a certainty that you should be shooting left handed.
I'm right handed. I bat left handed. I shoot right handed. I believe I was left eye dominant as a small child but I think since I wanted to shoot right handed, my Dad went with that. I couldn't wink with my left I and remember practicing that. I'm right eye dominant now. I've read that you can train yourself to change dominant eyes. It apparently happened to me but this was at an early age. Four and five I think.
A few years back I noticed that I could shoot a pistol fine but not a rifle. I had a tumor in my right eye that was treated but I continued to only have peripheral vision on that side. Poor me, sniff. I started asking around about left hand shooting and some people had had no vision in one eye for a very long time. That dried my tears up pretty fast. I considered shooting with my left eye with the rifle on the right side. This included using a rifle with a sever drop at the comb [Only works with shotguns] or using an offset scope. You would adjust the windage so the bullet would cross at a given range, say 100 yds. Then you would determine the correction (a few inches) for either closer or farther than the 100 yds. This works but is a pain in the butt. I thought switching to shooting left handed would be impossible.....it wasn't. You could go with semi autos, lever actions, single shot. Also there are lefty bolt guns, awkward to start out but doable. You can use a righty gun on the left side, without losing your point of aim between shots if you can rest the fore stock on something (self standing shooting sticks, tree limbs, etc) while you work the action with your right hand.
