Can lefties shoot right handed shotguns without shells flying in their face?

Sure can, and that is the big reason Benelli puts the safety where I do not like it...in front of the trigger guard. They only make a right handed shotgun, and the way lefties hold the stock their thumb would be too close to the safety if it were placed at the rear of the guard.
Yes, but it depends on the gun. A lefty friend of mine has a bottom eject shotgun because he was tired of shells hitting him. But he was able to shoot by Winchester 1300 without that issue. It can be distracting though - the shells were still whizing past his face. The longer the length of pull, the less likely the shells are to hit you.
Just as fezzant said, it depends on the gun. My wife and son are left handed, but because I own a Mossberg 500 pump, they have no problem shooting it. The tang safety is great for the ambidexterity, and as long as they do not need to shoot in quick succession, they can pull the gun away to chamber the new shell.
Browning BPS is a good universal gun it has the bottom eject and the tang safety. This way left and right handed people can use it.
