The Firing Line
I have a Mossberg 535 12 ga. camo turkey version, and I think its a great gun. Patterns well and seems as reliable as any gun. Kicks like a SOB but what shotgun doesn't? Why does everyone hating on Mossberg?

Why IS* everyone hating on Mossbergs?
How many rounds have you cycled through it? Newer Mossbergs by and large are of lesser quality and design than the competition. I see lots of them broken and malfunctioning at our hunting lease. They shoot way harder due to poor stock mechanics as compared to some other shotguns. I would not bring one home out of the rain, but you are welcomed to them. People like Fords or Chevy or Dodge, too. Who is right?
I think you answered your own question. Kicks like SOB.
Chevy owners.
I have not cycled very many rounds thru it, enough to pattern it for last season, probably less then 20. As a dedicated turkey gun it doesn't get heavy use so I hope it will last. As far as kicking hard I dont notice when blasting a turkey, but do realize it may influence a second shot. Patterning it is a pain, but I have never patterned a shotgun that isn't. What are some common malfunctions? Appreciate the imput.
New, out of the box, available today, it's hard to beat the 870 Rem!
That being said, what ammo do you use on turkeys?
Bubba
12 gauge Winchester 3" extended range #5 XXF choke, gives me a great pattern at 40 yards. How about you?
Extractors and extractor springs breaking and wood forend cracking and falling off.
i the majority of the people i know who uses mossberg buy one every two years to duck hunt on the coast with. if you shoot pumps with heavy shells and dont mind weight buy a benelli nova, ugly but comfortable and much smoother
if you ever needed a reason nchunt just gave you one, i dont want to buy a new shotgun every 2 years for the same purpose as the last one.
Mossebergs are trash any gun that the forend twists on and that i could break if im not careful doesent deserve my money.
First off, vasportsman, just because the speed-o-meter on your new Corvette goes to 170mph, doesn't mean that you gotta go 170mph every time you get in it!
I bought my Rem 870 back in the 90's and the receiver is rated for 3" ammo.
No. 1, I DO NOT shoot 3" ammo!
No. 2, I have NO desire to shoot 3.5" ammo!!
A buddy of mine comes up every year for spring turkey. He shoots a Mossberg 535 with 3.5" ammo, usually Win or Rem no 4's or 5's.
He has yet, (in 6 years) to make a "one shot" kill.
I shoot my Rem 870 with an extra full choke tube and Winchester Hi-Velocity 2.75" no 7.5 shot. So far, I've not needed a "followup" shot. All birds I've killed with the 870 have been one shot kills!
"Pattern density, not shot size, kills!"
Bubba
Thanks for the imput! I will try some of your advice bubba, I think I will try some 2.75's in 7.5, at least it will not kick as hard. Patterned it this weekend and am still sore. Didn't have a problem as far as second shots, killed the only turkey i saw last year at <15 yards with a single. I will definitely let ya know how it goes. As far as extractors, can those be upgraded?
Probably not unless you know someone willing to shape one by hand, harden it and install it. Would probably cost MORE than the gun is worth. LOL!!
Bubba
BTW, look for the spot on the turkeys neck where the feathers stop and the wattles start. THAT'S where to send you "first" shot.
The first "shotgun" turkey I killed was at approximately 25 yards and presented his head only. Shot placement "was not" optional. When the "white bobber" stopped momentarily, I touched it off and picked him up DIRT!! (that's Dead, Instantly, Right There!)
Good luck! Good hunting!!
Bubba
3.5 inch #4's, thats what you shoot a turkey with.
I use a mossberg with 3 inch BB leftovrs from goose season, does the job very nicely.
I also use the same choke, and it holds that pattern going across the filed as if its knocking out of the sky.
if it works use, other wise who cares what people think, let them be vegitarrain while you eat smoked turkey leg!
Hey Bubba, how bout that one from machinegunner, steel BB's and eating a smoked turkey leg. I never really developed a flavor for wild turkey legs, pain not worth the gain. My reply to his post, "Really?" (read as skepticism),,,
I had too much trouble with my Mossberg and sold it and now own a Remington 11-87 which I really like. It does cost more money though but it is worth it. An 870 Remington is a worthwhile gun also.
Say what you will about Mossbergs, just don't act like the 870 is a flawless piece of art. I've seen problems with both. Few, either way. The newer 870 Express is a rust magnet. Cheap finish.
shane,
I concur with the cheap finish on the 870 Express models. I camo painted mine after a few seasons. The finish process used would show little risers and pits like chop on water in the wind if examined under a microscope. Those little risers are surely rust magnets! Fine bead blasting or polishing removes the irregularities that catch water and rust, but add significantly to the cost of production, hence the high price of Wingmasters.
Mechanically speaking, I will take an 870 over a Mossberg every time. I have two and the only issues I have ever had was the tendency to rust on the Express Super Magnum model and hard extraction due to tons of dirt and powder residue.
I have used both and cannot find a problem with either of them. I have used the 500 in a 20 gauge as a youth, the 870 in a 12 gauge once I hit about 13, the 590 in the Marine Corps., and the 835 today as my main hunting/home defense shotgun.
I have shot many rounds through all of them, and can definitely say neither shot any better than the others. I think they are all great, but I tend to fancy my 835 the most. Gives me the best patterns with the shell and choke combination that I use.
HEY there, RES1956

Yes, really, I use left over goose loads with the same choke and as you quoted your supposed idol, I will too, it is "DIRT".
As far as not eating the whole bird, well your missing out on some great meat. I cannot see wasting what the good Lord hath provided. In fact I have smoked an entire wild turkey. Love it.
I may have developed a love of food that was earned since I have been without food in my life growing up...hard to beleive but I thought I would rather pay my house note then eat steak. (thats not sarcasim either RES1956.
Look at it from this angle, geese and turkey are roughly same size...one is landing in front of me the other is walking...I still aim for "head zone" Are you telling me that they (critters) know the difference of the shot used? I think not, really.
Its a matter of me not buying into what someone says I need and using what I have...and since I buy a case of goose loads, why would I want to buy one box of 5shots for a one shot deal at a turkey??
once again, this could be that I'm frugal and use what I have and eat all that I got.
good luck out there with the upcomeing turkey seasons and beware fo the turkey that knows that you dont eat their legs or use nonturkey shot. (read as how you want RES1956, I'm poking fun at you right now!).
thanks for the red, it proves the point.
I guess they hunt turkeys that know about the effects of steel shot intended for geese, and or do not eat the whole bird...too bad.
again, be safe out there!
I've had model 500's, a 835, and now use a 535835 combo for turkey deer shooting clays home defence and what ever else I want to use it for. Shoot hornady slugs have a after market stock and a scope on it right not and will dang near put almost every shot through the same hole at 100 yards. I don't think I just got a good gun because all my mossbergs have been great guns . Shoot with guys that think you have to have an expensive gun for it to shoot well. Mossberg makes great guns in my opinion. Like the one guy said if someone only buys fords than every chevy is a price of junk. Shoot them for yourself and make up your own mind.
My friend just bought another 535 at Wally World after the barrel and choke tube split on his old 535. Only two forearms split on the old one. Good price too!
