Recos on good shotgun history/mechanics books

Uploaded on January 31, 2012

I'm looking for any good recommendations on books that cover shotguns (mostly o/u and sxs). I'm interested in the history and mechanics as opposed to basic gear and technique. I'm currently reading John Taylors "Fine Shotguns", which touches on some of the differences in mechanics/parts and their benefits, but it lacks diagrams and more specifics. I'm researching (and saving) for a nice o/u and like being a bit more informed of what I'm buying. Thanks for your time and help.

You might try Michael McIntosh's books on double barrel shotguns. He does favor SxS but his three part series titled "Shotguns and Shooting" has a lot of history and details about the mechanical construction of guns (mono block, triggers, steels, stocks, chokes, ammo, shooting techniques, etc.) Sadly, the first two seem to be out of print, but you can find copies on Amazon and Ebay.

I hesitate to mention this, but you might checkout the the Orvis pocket sized book "The Orvis Field Guide to Shotgun Care & Maintenance" by Tom Morrow. This excellent and concise book seems to be out of print also, but if you keep your eyes open you might pick up a copy on-line or at one of the used book sellers in the double gun magazines. Unfortunately the last time I checked Amazon they wanted $400 for a copy--maybe a misprint.

Or maybe Orvis will isue a second printing.
